    Hi Everyone,

I’m trying to get back into digital video editing. Last time I did some projects I used Vegas Video and I really found that it was great. Now…3 years later… I’m wondering is there a better video editing program out there that people have found to be better/easier/more features/etc? That’s my first question

My second question is this… I have been recording stuff on miniDV cassests and I want to archive them on DVD. Has anyone found a good program that makes it easy to transfer the video from tape to DVD without any loss of quality?

Thanks very much for any help or advice. I know last time I was here many years ago you guys were amazing!

Ohh, I just saw that they now came out with Vegas 6 and DVD 3 and Movie Studio… Sorry, I have another question to add to that.

Is Vegas 6 worth it? and what was the consensus on Movie Studio? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks Again

Vegas 6 and DVDA 3 both have a ton of features over Vegas 3. The “Movie Studio” product is basically the “little brother” to Vegas and is priced accordingly.

Is there anything else about better programs for vid editing. Or also, an easy program to quickly transfer from miniDV tape to DVD without loosing quality. Thanks

I have used a few of the packages out there, but I am only an amateur, so don’t take what I say as any kind of gospel. In my opinion, Vegas is the best there is for PCs. On Mac I like FCP too. The last couple of years I have been using Ulead Media Studio pro which is nice, and has one advantage over Vegas, but is far behind in every other (imo). The advantage it has is that it edits MPEG quite well, Vegas doesn’t edit MPEG all that well, but Vegas does everything else better. I make DVDs from DV footage, I don’t need to edit MPEG, so it is not an issue for me.

It is not possible to transfer from DV to DVD without any quality loss. DVD doesn’t have the bandwidth of DV. Vegas will give you a very easy DV to DVD solution with very high quality DVD output however. Highly recommended.

How about if I was using a Duel Layer DVD would it be possible then to have the same quality? How is it that real manufactured DVD’s have such high quality? Im sure there has to be a way. Any suggestions?

As soon as you render to MPEG2, you WILL begin to lose information. Having said that, I routinely do 2 hours on a single layer disc and the quality looks the same as the original miniDV to my eyes. VHS copies look worse. I think you’ll be happy with the results.

Now, if you truly want a straight MiniDV to DVD solution, hook your camera up to one of the standalone DVD burners. You’ll have your DVD in real time.

The real reason that manufactured DVDs (i.e. the latest movie release) look so good is that they spend millions of $$ on the film and pay attention to detail at every step of the process.
There’s no way the average consumer will ever approach that quality.
You are your own quality control person. The old acronym GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) applies to the video world just like it does everywhere else. Do the best job of shooting your original material and follow that up with carefull editing and DVD mastering. What you’ll end up with should look almost as good as what you see on your original footage.
