    1. Is Generating peak file same as conforming audio? Is there anyway to not having to do that? I capture DV into PPr2 as DV avi, how does it need this process?

    2. When one is finish with a PPro Project, is there a batch clean up process in PPr2 that will remove all the Media Cache, Preview files, Encoded Media files…? Is there others?

    Sincerely,
    Perry

    1. Creating a peak file is necessary to properly display the audio waveform. These are small files that may take a while to create but it is worth it. Coneforming is taking audio that doesn’t match the settings and making a preview that does. Really big files can result. Maybe 10% of the size of the video if I remember correctly.

    2. I store all of the media cache and previews under the project directory on the scratch drive. Easy enough to clean it up when finished. I don’t think it is a good idea to ever let Premiere Pro delete files. Too many people would scream because things would magically disappear.

    Steve,
Thanks as always. #1 I don’t recognize “Generating Peak File” in 1.5 and even with your explanation, I really don’t understand what it is for and why this is needed. Is this again in CS3? #2, Good suggestions, I will re-map my cache… directories.

    Sincerely,

If I recall correctly, the peak files were generated during the conforming of the audio. And in 1.5, all audio was conformed.

When they started eliminating the conforming of audio that really didn’t need to be conformed, it was still necessary to create the preview files for the waveform. It is just more noticeable now. It is still time consuming, but not a burden in regards to file size.

Steve, that makes some sense now. But I recall in 1.5, if audio format matches the Project setting, there is no conform, no generating peak file business! I will give it a try later.

    Steve,
You have a better memory than me. Your assessment is correct. I tried it just now. Thanks for your help.
