    Hi,

In my quest to get a clear picture of assistant editor duties I have a couple of small questions regarding stringouts.

    1) Is there any difference between an assembly cut and a stringout (not a dailies stringout of course but a story stringout)?

    2) Also, if you are asked to do a story stringout on a film, do you normally just pick the best takes to work with, or do multiple versions with different takes?

    Thank you!

    1. No difference, just different terminology.

    2. Don’t make different cuts with different takes, just put all the takes into one stringout. The editor will use it to see all the footage without having to open each clip individually. He may even begin editing using the stringout.

what if they give you a sheet, outlining what they want, do you just follow the sheet exactly?

Well, the best thing you could is ask what they’d like you to do, but otherwise, I would follow the outline and only stray from it if for some reason you can’t do what they ask or it just doesn’t work or there’s some kind of problem.
But remember, it’s only a string-out so don’t stress about it too much.
