    New scene, simple cube, nake editable, how come I don’t se 4 new faces in the object manager andf I cant use the plolygon tool to move one face off the original cube?

    Same as above, but add more segements to the original cube and now use bevel on one face. It always renders with smooth and I don’t see the sharp edges of the beveled cube surface like in the older verions?

    Probably some new settings I am not aware of?

    Making a cube editable never broke it up into separate faces. It just makes it a polygonal cube. If you want to split it up into faces you have to use the functions>disconnect/explode segments or functions>split commands.

    Adam,
    I was watching a tutorial (older v9) and they instantly had 6 faces in the object tree under the cube parent object. The teacher did not show how or eplain, it just popped on after making the cube an editable object. This was Cineversity tutorial.

    I tried your way in r10 and it appears to take many steps to get all six sides separated and listed on the object manager. Was there possibly an old plugin or something they were using?

    Do you know why I now get all soft edge transitions when beveling the cube faces (I see this on text also)? I thought v9 always gave me sharp edge transitions on beveling. All I can figure out is to always adjust the phong tag down in the angle. Sorry, I am not an expert in this app, but learning quickly.

    No problem, I’m happy to (try to) help. 🙂

    I have no idea what they were doing in that Cineversity tut, but that’s not normal behavior. Maybe they were using shortcut keys or a script or something? That would certainly be bad practice for a tutorial….

    The quickest way to do it:

    *make editable (C shortcut);
    *enable poly mode and select all (ctrl + a);
    *Functions>Disconnect (uncheck “preserve groups”);
    *and Functions>Explode Segments.

    Regarding the Phong issue, AFAIK the same problem was there in R9. The workaround is to use “Break Phong Shading” after you do the bevel. The command is available in the right-click context menu and the Functions menu.

    Thank you Adam. I was missing a few steps that you just outlined. Such as Select all and uncheck preserve group.

    Congratulations on your book.

    ehemmm…
    Insert a solid cube object.
    I attributes tick “Separate Surfaces”.
    “Make Editable”, and you have a Null with all 6 separate faces in it.
