Hey cowfolk! I’ve been retained to put together my first commercial (I’m quite excited, yet quite nervous).
Can anyone give me some basic things to keep in mind as far as format when creating comps in AE?

    Color Settings?

    Resolution… 720:480 I assume?

    Render settings?

I’ll take any suggestions at any level. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I’m assuming that the commercial will be going from you to some kind of video editor? Always ask that person what he or she needs from you.

    – Size? 720×480? 720×486? 640×480? It depends on the editor’s system: Avid, Media 100, FCP, DigiSuite?
    – 29.97 fps? Yes.
    – Format? Animation codec? DV? TGA stills? Avid codec?
    – Levels? Broadcast safe 16-235? 0-255?
    – Best quality? Of course.
    – Millions or Trillions? Only Trillions (16-bit-per-channel) if they want you to render to a 10-bit codec such as Blackmagic.

Now if they want you to deliver tape, you probably need to find a post house to do it for you, so it comes out acceptable for broadcast.

Once you talk to that technical person, if you need more help to fulfil his/her needs, come back to us.

    Hey Steve,

I’m creating the whole thing in AE. Does that make a difference in any of the specs you mentioned above. The client is basically giving me some still photos and the rest will be up to me.

    Thanks.

Yep, I assumed that. My advice still holds. Since you aren’t broadcasting it from your computer, and AE cannot output to tape, you need to give your rendered movie (or sequence) to someone else, whether it be a post house or the TV station.

To whom are you giving your final render? You must talk to a technical person there. I cannot overemphasize this.

Like Steve said, check the specs with the person that’s going to integrate your clip into the broadcast pipeline. However, I think it would be safe to assume that the resolution would be 720 x 486 with .9 pixel aspect. That’s standard D1 setup.

    720 x 480 is most commonly DV.
