I got a couple of simple questions (Before I ruin a lot of brain cells making mistakes)

I’ve digitized my DVCProHD footage shot on my HDX900 into FCP6. It came in as 960×720, not 1280×720. Here’s my questions.

Which timeline preset do I use?
Do I have to convert everthing later to 1280×720 for layoff to tape?
What size AE graphics should I render out as?

    Thanks in advance.

[santellavision] “Which timeline preset do I use?”

DVPRO HD 720p60, 720p30 or 720p24…whatever format you shot. Choose that easy setup and you will be good to go.

[santellavision] “Do I have to convert everthing later to 1280×720 for layoff to tape?”

No. It will lay off to tape properly. What tape format are you laying off to?

[santellavision] “What size AE graphics should I render out as?”

    1280×720.

When finished, I will layoff back to DVCProHD tape. I guess I don’t understand why you don’t have to make it 1280×720?

Because DVCPro HD is an anamorphic format which FCP will play back in full 1280×720 raster. BUT you leave the Sequence at 960×720 for proper playback. Simply use any DVCPro HD 720 Easy Setup timeline and you’re good to go. Do NOT change your Sequence settings to 1280×720 or you’ll be rendering all your clips in the timeline.

What about redering out AE graphics? Do I render them in 960×720 or 1280×720?

I render out all my AE graphics at 1280×720.

Thanks guys for all the info. But, I have one last question…

If I build graphics that are 1280×720 and stick them into a timeline that is smaller at 960×720 won’t they be too wide?

Yes and no. If you create renders in After Effects at 1280×720 but render using the DVCPro HD codec, then all will be fine.

If you create graphics in Photoshop 1280×720 then those will come in a bit wide and not line up as you intended. For Photoshop graphics, I resize everything to 960×720 before bringing it into Final Cut Pro, then it will all line up exactly as you had it in Photoshop.

    Walter,

What size do you render out AE when using the Animtion code for alpha encoded graphics? Or do you use a different codec for that?
