What is the correct way to ingest this material for a 1080p project to preserve this added resolution?

I feel like “resize image to fit format raster” will essentially bake in the project resolution to the media, leaving me with a pillar-boxed clip that will lose resolution when blown up. Am I right in this assumption?

End result, I’d like to be able to adjust the position of the clip on the Y axis that the 1440 pixel height affords me without losing resolution.

Link via AMA and set target in source settings to be 1920 x 1080.The you can have the Y axis to play with.

    Thanks, Michael.

Are you saying to adjust settings in the frameflex tab? I don’t specifically see anywhere to set target size. There are aspect ratio options however. I do see that I can play with the Y axis within source settings, and choose to center crop. What I am wanting to do is transcode with 1440 height and be able to manipulate whenever I want. Not just during ingest.

It’s a little wonky with 1080 projects as DNxHD is not a scalable codec like the new DNxHR which allows any XY up to 6K to be transcoded and maintain its original XY. In a 1080 project, it will transcode as 1440 inside 1080 and keep the metadata for reframing, but you are not getting the quality at that point as a transcode makes 1080 media. If you use FrameFlex on that media, you can relink to the original files after the fact and then transcode the reframed 1080 sections. If that makes sense.

OK. I figured out how to tweak it after transcode by simply changing the aspect ratio setting in the FrameFlex box in Source Settings.

What you are also telling me now though is a little alarming. I’ll check into that. I would hate to have to relink for framing to get the correct resolution. Especially if the media is already high res (which it will be!). That does theoretically make sense though.

    Thanks again.

If you’re on Media Composer 8.3 try switching your project to 2K or UHD, AMA link to the 1920×1440 footage, then transcode and choose to “keep source dimensions” (or something like that) in the transcode setting. Pick the DNxHR flavor of your choice and transcode it.

When it’s done, switch back to your 1080p project and you’ll be able to FrameFlex the 1920×1440 DNxHR footage and you will have the entire Y resolution to work with for reframing/keyframing. You’ll get better playback with DNxHR than the native files (usually).

This post reminds me that I need to submit a feature request for Avid to put the “keep source dimensions” as a transcode option in a 1080p project.

They already mentioned that was coming in 8.4 (keeping source size in an HD project). It will be a DNxHR codec when it does.

Excellent news! Where did you see that, and did they announce anything else? Thanks!
