1920x1080DVCPro to DV50 letterbox conversion
Mornin’ All.
Well, it seems that my coffee is yet to kick in this morning.
I need to make a Quicktime movie of a 1920×1080 DVCPro sequence and export it as a Letterboxed 4×3 DV50 file. Both are 29.97fps. For some reason using QT Conversion from the timeline, I cannot get this thing Letterboxed to save my life. The result is either Animorphic or a variation of a Pillerbox-like file. Anyone got the work flow for this while I make another pot of stronger coffee?
My brain will kick in and I’ll wake up at any moment.

DVCPro HD is anamorphic. 1440×1080 or 1280×1080 depending on if it’s PAL or NTSC.
Export to Compressor and make the Letterbox file there.

I’m obviously still asleep this morning. I’m using Compressor2 on this machine. Where in the DV50 preset Inspector do I check to make a letterboxed output of this HD file? I’ve tried various combinations and I get an anamorphic 4×3 each time. I’m missing something simple here. I really don’t like Mondays…zzzzz

Should just be a check box to make it 16×9 and that should result in a letterboxed image. Never had to do a DV50 file from that before so I’m not entirely sure.
If all else fails, just drop the HD timeline into the DV50 timeline, add shift fields and render. Not the most elegant solution but it will work in a pinch.

Try this: Use Advanced Format Conversion. Use the DV50 preset — not the DV50 Anamorphic. Go to the Geometry tab in the setting. Make sure Dimensions (encoded pixels) is set to 720×480 601/DV. Set Output Image Inset (padding) to 16:9 1.78:1. In the Preview window, click the button in the far upper right. You should now see a letterboxed 16:9 image on the right side of the source/preview split. This is your output preview. Does it look correct? Set an in and an out a few seconds apart and submit to convert a short test. Should be correct.

I’m using Compressor2 for this project. I checked the same file on my MBP which is running Studio2 and Compressor3 and the setting is right there where it belongs. I don’t have that option on the version of Compressor I have on this computer. That would explain why there didn’t seem to be anyway to get this done. I ended up doing the “Brute Force” method, like Walter suggested, and just put the HD sequence into an SD timeline, futzed with it a bit and exported that. It worked fine. Guess it’s time to upgrade the old dog computer here. It’s frustrating since I’m running Studio2 on my MacPro and my MBP at home and I don’t have the same options here at work running on this old steam-powered Quad G5 running 5.1.4.
