16×9 footage and canvas window
I’ve never really had this problem before, but it has suddenly come up. Whenever I am importing 16×9 footage into Final Cut Pro, the footage doesn’t fit to the canvas window, but leaves the black bars. Now this might be alright; however, when I’m adding “dip to color” dissolves and other effects it looks really bad because the dissolves go outside the footage.
I’m using a DVX100B, am shooting in the Advanced Pulldown setting at 24P. When I capture into Final Cut Pro, my capture settings are at the Advanced Pulldown Removal Setting, and the timeline is set at NTSC 48 Hz Anamorphic.
Any ideas on how to adjust the footage going into the canvas window would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Black bars, left and right or top and bottom? Did you shoot 4:3 or anamorphic (Squeeze)?
You need to give all the details of your clip and sequence.

I have black bars on the top and bottom. I also shot just regular letterbox off the DVX.
All my clip settings are 720×480 at 29.97fps. The compressor says DV/DVCPRO-NTSC and all of them have anamorphic checked.
As for the sequence, it’s DV50 NTSC 48kHz – 23.98
I’ve been trying to figure out the best capture setting for my DVX when it comes to 24p and 24pa, and I keep getting conflicting information I feel like. So I thought it might just have been something I did wrong within the capturing process.

This is different from what you posted.
Here clips are 29.97 vs 23.98 (not an issue for the bar problem but it is an issue, what are they)
Here you say your seq is DV50 NTSC 48kHz – 23.98, but not anamorphic, like you did before, which is it, this is probably the problem, if is it not anamorphic than your footage gets letterboxed when you put it on the timeline. You need a new seq that is anamorphic and it will not give you the bars.But there is not such thing as Letterbox “Off” on the camera, there is normal (4:3) Letterbox (4:3 Letterbox) and Squeeze (anamorphic) what did you shoot.
Use 24pA when you want to edit true 24p, this is best for DVD. This pulldown should be removed on capture.
Use 24p when you plan to edit in a 29.97 seq and combine the footage with other 29.97 clips from other sources or cameras.Then why are you editing DV50, that is not what you have, you have DV or DV25.

I apologize for the confusion. My sequence was initially anamorphic, but then I had switched it to see if using the 23.98 setting would work, and I posted that by mistake when I was responding.
When I brought in the footage initially my sequence was DV NTSC – Anamorphic. On my DVX I shot with the 4:3 Letterbox (in my previous post I just meant that the Letterbox option was selected). Should I be using the anamorphic setting on the DVX? I was thinking about trying it, but there seemed to be a different workflow that I wasn’t familiar with so I haven’t tried it yet.

If you want to edit the footage as anamorphic then you should be shooting in “Squeeze” mode. I would never shoot in letterbox, never, all it is doing is blocking the top and bottom which can be done easily in post but cannot be undone.
Not the squeeze mode is actually doing an enlargement in camera from the 4:3 image. but it does a fairly good job and is better than doing within FCP. The best way to do it is with the anamorphic lens. But that has its own issues. (this is all from memory, been a while since I used the DVX).
Edit as you shot, shoot as you want to edit.
