16×9 dvd from 4×3 video?
Posted by Paul Escamilla on May 31, 2007 at 6:59 pmHi,
I have a 4×3 video (DV codec) and my client all of a sudden wants a 16×9 DVD. Does anyone know a quick workflow for doing this? I obviously want to avoid distortion, so black bars on the sides are okay. I’m working with FCP and DVD Studio Pro. Please help!Paul Escamilla replied 18 years, 11 months ago 4 Members · 4 Replies -

But the simple thing to so is nest your sequence in a 16X9 sequence. Personally if you are just going to leave pillar bars on the sides then just leave it as 4X3, that way it will look normal when played on a 4X3 Television, and it will also automatically play with pillar bars on the side when played on a widescreen TV.

May 31, 2007 at 8:02 pmThere is no quick workflow to do this properly and to create it letterboxed is no different than what you’d get if you played SD 4×3 on a 16×9 widescreen monitor.
To properly create a 16×9 version your would need to blow up the video to 133% and pan and scan every shot to recompose and repo and resize every title and graphic.
Hope this helps…

May 31, 2007 at 9:07 pmHello Pesky!
Depending on how you shot it you could just do an extraction from the 4×3 and make it 16×9; either 1.78, 1.85, or 2.35. Depending on how you framed it.. And of course you can move it north or south as needed for headroom..
This will be a big blow-up so you’ll lose some resolution.. For broadcast up to 20% blow-up is ok..(IMHO) If it’s not for broadcast or film.. It might still be ok…
Thanks,

May 31, 2007 at 10:13 pmThank you to everyone for the responses, and apologies about the search. I did do one but I never seem to have much luck with the search function on Creative Cow.
In any case, it does appear that trying to convert the footage to 16×9 is a royal pain, and that making the 4×3 dvd and allowing the monitor to add bars is the way to go.
Again, thanks, and if anyone has any other suggestions or tips, i would love to read them. I have not worked in 16×9 at all and it is a bit frightening.
