16bit photo sequence compression – banding/stairstepping
I’ve got a 16bit photo sequence edited in after effects with a grayscale gradient as a background (NOT
computer generated).
The gradient is smooth in the TIFF 16bit version.
I’ve made a ProRes 4444 output with adobe media encoder and it looks great.The problems comes with h264. Is there a way to compress the footage in h264 with 10bit color depth?
In adobe media encoder I can’t find 2pass option, neither High 10 profile for h264 in .mov wrapper.Any suggestions? change the encoder (which one?)? Change adobe media encoder option?
I need two files, one 432p sendable (so with small filesize), and a 720p for local playback (i’m currently using the 4444 version but i would like to know if there’s a “lighter” and more compatible way).
The files will be played on a PC/Mac, no TV.thanks

Adding a tiny amount of noise to a gradient or dithering it will help, I know it sounds odd but it can do the trick.
