We shot a show on a Sony D35 with a 16:9 lens. Now, when I try to capture the footage in FCP5, it comes in squeezed to 4:3. I’m using the blackmagic NTSC anamorphic codec. Do I need a deck that can playback 16:9? Currently we’re using a Sony BVW2800 to capture. Or do I have a setting incorrect. We shot this show in 16:9 in order to mix it with previously shot HD footage downconverted and letterboxed onto a 4:3 tape. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Like the description “anamorphic” says, 16:9 is a squeezed 4:3 image.
It is stored on tape like this, the pixel resolution is the same than
4:3 and you edit it like this – there are no codecs for anamorphic.

The only thing FCP – or your BMD-settings – can do is to unsqueeze
the image on you computer display. On your videomonitor you have
to press the ‘aspect’ or ’16:9′-button.

Open the item properties (apple + 9) to see if the checkbox for
    ‘Anamorphic’ is checked.

So are you saying that when you shoot in true 16:9 (not anamorphic) the tape stores it as a 4:3 image? Then you have to Unsqueeze it back to 16:9 in FCP?
