I’ve been shooting and editing in 16:9 and when I export to MPEG-4 using Quicktime Conversion in FCP HD, I get two different results. Sometimes the letterbox bars are there and sometimes it streches the image vertically. I’m not sure why it’s inconsistent. Ideally, I’d like it to be viewed in the 16:9 Quicktime viewer, no bars or stretching. My capture and sequence settings are set to 16:9 and I’m using the squeeze feature on a DVX-100A. When I edit in FCP the canvas displays the clips in 16:9. The way I am converting now is by setting ins & outs in the timeline and choosing Using Quicktime Conversion, MPEG-4, High Speed Modem. I guess my questions are:

What is the best way to convert for the web?

How do I keep the 16:9 ratio in Quicktime?

Can it be done without the letterbox bars (the 16:9 Quicktime viewer)?

Does the viewer that clicks on a URL to a 16:9 Quicktime video need to have whatever Quicktime version the creator had in order to see it viewed in 16:9?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jared

    Jared,

In addition to Telly’s excellent article, there’s a tut on widescreen to the Web at rippletraining.com.

This is a very helpful thread. However, I need some advice on how best to capture some squeeze footage shot on my DVX100B in 24P (NOT advanced). So far, any settings I use in final cut end up with horizontally interlaced blocks/blotches at times, definitely sub-par quality for exporting to .flv for my website. Do I need a pulldown removal when not shooting in advanced?

Here are the settings I used when shooting:

    Knee: Auto
    Matrix:*Cine-Like
    Progressive: 24P
    Syncro Scan: 1/60.0
    Aspect*Conv.: Squeeze
    Color Bar: Off
    Setup: 0%

    Thanks for any ideas!
