Forgive me if this has been tackled before, i did look through the archives but could not find the answer.

I’m editing anamorphic SD footage from a SOny PD-150 and Sony FX-1 in FCP 5.1.4 (computer specs below)

Now i’m not sure which sequence setting is best to use for editing…..
—with the anamorphic sequence (anamorphic box is checked) the footage looks proper on my computer but on my NTSC monitor looks vertically stretched….
—with the non-anamorphic sequence (anamorphic box not checked), the footage looks letter boxed and proper in both my computer and NTSC monitor–HOWEVER, i must render this footage so the footage does look slightly deteriorated.

I’d prefer to work with the anamorphic sequence for no loss of quality, but how will i know that my client will be seeing the proper perspective? Will outputting to tape also result in this stretched perspective? what about dvd?

NOTE: when i play the tapes diret to my monitor i still get this vertically stretched perspective…short of buying a new monitor what can i do to provide my client with the proper aspect ratio if they don’t have a 16 x 9 display?

side question: the PD-150 footage looks slightly fuzzy…having done research too late, i’ve discovered that the PD-150 loses resolution when shooting in 16 x 9 (360 lines as opposed to 480)….is there ANYTHING i can do to fix this in post…(HA, gotta love that question)

thank you all for your time.

You need an external monitor that has a 16:9 setting.

If you shot anamorphic (and it sounds like you captured anamorphic) you should edit in an anamorphic sequence. As your monitor does not have a 16:9 button by the sound of it, what you view externally will be the wrong shape. This is fine.

If your client has requested an anamorphic master, it is then up to them to to have a 16:9 display to view it properly. If they wish to display it on a 4:3 display, you would need to deliver a letterboxed 4:3 version. You could do this by dropping your finished output into a 4:3 sequence, where it would be automatically letterboxed.

You seem unclear what FCP actually does when you select an anamorphic sequence. All it is doing is resizing the canvas so as to simulate a 16:9 display. Anamorphic footage actually IS 4:3 natively, it has to be stretched (hence the name) by the display device you are viewing it on to be viewed correctly.

You need to ask your client if they require 16:9 FHA (full height anamorphic) or 4:3 letterboxed for final output. And since the PD150 was in an anamorphic mode, NO there is nothing you can do in post to improve the picture quality.
