I have been asked by an advertising agency about creating After Effects content for a video wall display that they have constructed in a shopping center in the uk. This may sound straight forward BUT…the wall includes 16 X 1080p plasma displays arranged in a haphazard style. The ideas we have discussed involve full screen video, animated characters moving through/interacting with the maze of screens.

If anyone has had any experience of similar projects (in after effects)or has any advice on how to orchestrate such a project any info would be much appreciated.

I have thought about creating one giant composition and trying to get a template of the screen layout and creating separate compositions for each screen BUT i am a bit concerned about render times etc.

    any thoughts, let me know,
    Cheers,
    Andi

We have a client that has asked us to do similar things several times – 8 linked hi def projectors, 36 flat screens etc etc. We’ve found the best way to get through the approval process to the final renders is to set up a master comp, as you say, from a template/plan of the screen layout.

We usually position colored solids, numbered to represent the different screens. We then make comps for each screen and import the master template into each of them, positioning it in the correct place for each screen. (The colored solids help you align it in each comp with accuracy). Then, all the work is done in the big master comp.

When it’s time to render, you can render the big master out (at a reduced size) for client approvals (this helps everyone get an idea of what the actual thing will look like) and then the finals are rendered from the individual comps.

Render times, as always, depend on what you’ve got going on, but we’ve never had any real problems.

    Good luck!

    Nick

The Digital Signage industry is huge these days. A major factor in determining your workflow is knowing how the movie will be played out to the display matrix. Some sign systems have proprietary players that run through programmable scalars. You need to find out before you place a bid.
A scalar mean a no-brainer on your end, delivery is determined by the manufacturer.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I worked a number of years ago on a project for Apple/Motorola that was 9 discrete screens. I’m talking like 1996 or so. Early days of AE.

We had some scenes with duplicate content and some with content that moved from screen to screen.

We were always doing math to determine the position of Screen 4 or 7 relative to the total measurements of the whole screen.

In AE as I recall we typically did separate comps–but that was back in a day of greater AE limitation.

That sounds like a heck of a lot of fun, honestly. I’m jealous!

Large Comp + intelligent use of AEs Region of Interest will work well for checking the entire thingy. Sounds like a fun project!

    Good Luck
