I shoot with several FX1 and HC1 Sony cameras. My understanding is that their native resolution is 1440x1080i due to the bandwidth limits of the HDV format to minidv. With that said, I have been using that resolution in my Vegas settings, but what about using 1920x1080i is that possible without losing quality? This is a little sketchy for me, is all that going to 1440 doing is making the pixels rectangular instead of square? Any input and insight into this is appreciated, and please feel free to get technical and such….greatly appreciate this!

    Yes, because HDV is 1440×1080 PAR 1.3333. When you multiply 1440 x 1.3333 you get 1920! So 1440×1080 PAR 1.333 = 1920×1080 PAR 1.000.

So what should I set my project for? Also, what should I render it as 1920×1080 or 1440×1080..thanks for the explaination!!

I like to keep my projects the same as my source. So when I’m editing footage from my Sony Z1U which is HDV I set my project for 1440×1080. When I’m editing family footage in AVCHD from my Sony CX12 I set my project for 1920×1080. I also render the same. For the Z1U I’ll render to Blu-ray 1440×1080 and for the AVCHD I’ll render to Blu-ray AVC 1920×1080.

If, however, I’m working with After Effects, I will always output as 1920×1080 just so I don’t have to play around with PAR settings in AE. So there are times when I’ll render 1440×1080 to 1920×1080 to use multiple tools.

John – I am assuming that if you are mixing the two different formats together, you set your project to 1920 x 1080?

Yup, that’s what I would do.
