128 MB or 256 MB?
Posted by Ntz on March 20, 2006 at 1:47 pmHi,
I’m thinking about getting the macbook pro. Is there a huge difference between the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128 MB and the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256 MB?
Meaning: Is it just conveniently faster, or does it divide by two or more rendering time?Dave Mac replied 20 years, 1 month ago 4 Members · 5 Replies -

March 20, 2006 at 1:48 pm256MB would run Motion a lot better and would also drive two monitors better… other than that though, won’t speed up rendering because it’s a CPU intensive task…

March 20, 2006 at 2:29 pmso you’re saying that if I use Motion very rarely and if I dont use a second monitor, final cut wont work any different with 256 MB instead of 128 MB? That would be great… Also, do you think there’s a significant difference between 1,83 Ghz and 2 Ghz?
Thanks a lot! -

March 20, 2006 at 3:18 pmDon’t think that you’d see a big speed bump per se between the two, however the extra RAM (and it’s on a single chip too) and the 256MB graphic display as well as the larger Hard drive (And I’d suggest you upgrade that to the 7200RPM drive) is certainly worth the price bump.
In general, I follow mama’s rules… “You can’t have too much computer nor too much RAM”…

March 23, 2006 at 2:49 amI would agree with Jerry’s sentiment to get the most you can in a machine.
I would also add that Final Cut Pro, and the Mac OS itself (hence pro apps too), will increasingly use more the the memory available for better and better “realtime” graphics as new versions/updates appear. It makes sense that the capabilities now primarily in Motion will spill over into the other products over time….
