I have a project shot with several cameras. One of the cameras was set to 12-bit audio; the rest were at 16-bit. The 12-bit material was captured using the 32000 khz Load Preset for “12/16-bit Audio” on Premiere Pro 1.5, and is designated “32000hz 16-bit Stereo” in the clip description. The 16-bit recordings were all captured with the 48 khz preset for all “16-bit audio” and all have a “48000 16-bit Stereo” description. I’ve had trouble in the past with 12-bit recordings not holding sync on long takes (on another edit system). Should I try to recapture the 12-bit at the 48 khz preset? Is there a way to convert the 32000 khz audio to 48000 khz in Premiere Pro (or Audition)? Or is it even necessary to have the audio types match, or will I be able to edit without sync problems when mixing (cuts or actual mixing) between 32000 and 48000 tracks?

    As ever, help is needed.

PPro will create “conformed” working audio files once the clip is brought into the project. The files will be 32 bit at the sampling rate of the project. Your twelve bit audio will be converted and if it’s synced on your source tape, it should be synced in PPro.

I’ve reviewed the captured files and sync is fine. So if I edit normally, things should be fine—even if the 12-bit original is now designated 32000 HZ while the 16-bit original is designated 48000 HZ??

Many thanks for the help. There’s a lot I don’t know; I’ll keep my notes on this one.

Premiere Pro does a great job at keeping multiple different sources in sync. It’s rare that you need to worry about sync. The only time I have seen a sync issues is it I captured a tape using a deck with a clogged head. Some of the data was missing and it “shortened” the length of the clip.
