    Hi all,

(after some searching, I keep finding almost answers, so please bear with me!)

I’m working on a documentary that shot footage on the EX1 and HVX200. Regarding the HVX200, the DP says he shot it at 1080p30 @ 29.97. This is confirmed when it’s brought into FCP through Log and Transfer: Vid Rate is 29.97 and Compressor is 1080p30. However, to cut it with the EX1 footage, which is at 23.98, what do you suggest is my best method ? Also, the sound mixer gave us .wav files at 23.98 which I need to sync with the HVX footage. Am I in for a headache?

    PART 2:

After telling the DP that he shot 1080p30 @ 29.97, he shot this past weekend at 1080p24 @ 23.98. But it’s coming into FCP as 1080p30 @ 29.97 still. What’s going on?

    PLEASE HELP!

Most of these similar threads are preventable by getting everyone who is involved together and opening some manuals and doing some tests.

In every similar thread I can recall, the suggestions were to reshoot because, in the long run, that was going to be easier-faster-better looking, or to decide on the final output medium and then work backwards, conforming everything to that specification. Terrific issues come up when you start mixing frame rates because the look and feel of the modified footage is often distinctly different. One minute of video is still one minute but when you conform to different rates, you either throw frames away or try to create frames that did not exist. Expensive and kinda silly in this day and age when email is available and it’s universally accepted throughout known space that fixing it in post is more difficult and more expensive and more frustrating that acquiring it correctly.

Your audio files may or may not give you problems. You won’t know till you start adding them to the timeline. What did you give your audio guy? 30? Or did he just make up his mind unilaterally that 24 was the target?

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.

I understand about the testing before shooting. Unfortunately, I was brought on a month into production and was the first person to think about post. It’s very maddening to be in that situation because a lot of this is preventable had there been some forethought. It seems that nowadays, a lot of productions try to save money by skimping on post, thinking it’s not important. WHY?

Anyway, the audio and EX 1 footage sync fine. It’s just the HVX footage that I’m worried about. I did some tests for the producer/director and he seems to be okay with simply using the “Remove Advanced Pulldown” tool, so I guess that’s what we’ll do. Looks choppy, but oh well. Until I figure something else out, that’s the route we’ll take.
