  • 1080p frame rate issues? 24p,30p or 60i?

Posted by Matt Campbell on March 24, 2010 at 8:41 pm

I have some footage from a shoot that was done a while back and already been produced. I’m putting together a piece for a friends reel. Problem: the footage supplied (image #1 below) tells me its 60i running at 29.97. He told me they for sure shot this at 24p on P2 and the HVX or one of its brothers. When I bring into FCP and hit yes to change sequence settings to match clips settings I get horrible interlacing (image #2 below).

This is probably an easy fix, but I’m not sure what to do. Is this one of those instances where its 24p within a 60i shell? Do I need to remove the pulldown? If so, how? Is Cinema Tools and the reverse Telecine function good for this? Compressor?

    Any help would be sa-weet!

Thanks Dave. I thought it was 60i. If I remember correctly the HVX only shoots true 24p in 720p mode. I.E. 720p24PN.

Regarding the pulldown, since I can’t to this on ingest like you would with DV, would Cinema Tools be best for this? I’ve never used it before. I’ve only messed around with it. I believe the Reverse Telecine function would remove this properly, correct? Or would Compressor work as well?

You CAN do this on injest…in the Log and Transfer preferences there is the option to REMOVE ADVANCED PULLDOWN. Now…if this was shot 1080i 24pA…pulldown will be removed. If it was shot 1080i 24p…then it will come in as 24p over 29.97. That is why you see interlacing.

Is this for the WEB? Or is this for DVD or TV? If the former, then yes, remove pulldown with Cinema Tools as the web wants progressive. If this is for TV or DVD, then leave it. TV wants 29.97, and this will look normal on a TV. This is why proper monitoring of your footage is essential.

Yikes, that’s awful. That’s not just interlacing, it looks like reversed field order interlace (the “zipper” look). Could you report what the Sequence Settings (⌘-0) are and the Item Properties/Format of the clip?

Wow, thanks all for the insight.

Shane Is this for the WEB? Or is this for DVD or TV?

This is for both web and DVD. Since I wasn’t given the P2 folders, all I have is the original media and finish spots. Since he wants shots that weren’t used in the finished product I have to go back to the footage, already ingested. I’ve been messing around with Cinema tools and it looks like I got correct 24p clips. This will be used for web and DVD. My plan is to keep progressive and simply create a progressive DVD. This is another grey area for me. Whats the norm here? With newer widescreen TVs, I’ve been creating prog DVDs. But what if someone still has a 4×3 TV. Will the DVD player add in pulldown?

Dave Since this video has already been cut and exported as one big clip, you can bet the pulldown cadence is inconsistent from shot to shot

Dave, the master I have is ProRes 1080 24p. And the clips have already been digitized into quicktimes. I wasn’t given the P2 folders. I’m trying to match the clips to the master. As I said above, I think I got it with Cinema tools. thx

Tom Could you report what the Sequence Settings (⌘-0) are and the Item Properties/Format of the clip?

Tom, this info is above, the first image. I clips were DVCPro HD 1080i60i or 30p. Sequence settings were the same but 29.97 when I hit yes, to change sequence settings to match clips settings. I think i’m getting there with Cinema Tools. thx

That image is from Quicktime Player, is it not? I was hoping for info from Final Cut’s Browser in addition.

But no matter. Good that you’re making it work. What I’ve learned with progressive is that Compressor does a reliable job of handling a 23.98 Quicktime master and converting it with the proper pulldown and flags for use in DVD. If a 4:3 TV is connected and the player is properly set up, the DVD player will play it correctly.

Hey guys i have a similar problem. I shot footage to my firestore FS-100 in 1080/24p. I was told by focus to set the s in either Quicktime PN or P2 PN & the HVX200 in 1080i/24p. But it shows up the same as 29.97. When I try to remove the extra frames FCP says there are no DVCPRO files to remove the extra frames from. But it clearly show in the info section that it is DVCPRO 1080i @ 29.97? What can I do to remove the extra frames? I have no experience with compressor, I have it just never usec it. Thanks for any help Randy
