1080p footages in a 720p sequence, loss of quality
Hey,
I’m editing a music video that has been shot with both 5D and 7D.
Footages from 5D are always in 1080p and 7D Footages are sometimes in 720p sometimes in 1080p.
All transcoded in Prores HQ, I kept native resolution for all clips.I configured my timeline in 720p to keep best quality for 720p footages and also to be able to reframe some of my 1080p footages.
I also have 1 black cache to simulate the 2.35 format.When I render my timeline I have a loss of quality on all my 1080p footages.
I tried to put the 1080p footages in 100% to have them full frame in the 720p sequence, doesn’t work eitherI tried in a 1080p sequence. No issues.
Is it possible to have quality of native 1080p quality when they render in 720p sequence ?

It’s a bit of a catch 22. You can scale them where they are displaying pixel for pixel in the 720p sequence, but then they get blown up on the external display because the 720p is being blown up to 1080 to fill the 1080 display/TV.
Or you can tell it to fit the frame of the 720p sequence, so it is displayed on the external in the same dimensions as the original shot, but obviously it’s now being down sampled to 720p.
You should be editing in a 1080 sequence. 1080 will stay 1080. 720 gets enlarged to 1080. But you can’t avoid that anyway. Displays and TVs are 1080 now. Half the broadcasts are 720. Your display is blowing it up to 1080. and it looks fine.
Now if your 720p is 60p, that’s another issue. You’d need to edit in a 1080i sequence then to keep from mucking up the temporal data. FCP 7 can’t interlace 60p to 29.97i. It just drops every other frame. Oddly, FCP X can do it I think.
