Activity Forums Panasonic Cameras 1080i???

I have a large production this month that we’re looking at shooting with Varicams – The rental house just informed me that they are only 720… I was under the impression that they will shoot 1080i 59.94 but it wasn’t full raster (except for the newer model that shoots avcintra)

Is this true? Can I not shoot 1080i? If not, how bad does a 720 upconvert look?

The HDX900 (same chip as Varicam) but without variable frame rates.. will do an up res 1080i.. totally acceptable for Discovery/Nat geo/BBC etc..

    Shaun,
I’ve shot shows for Discovery using the VariCam and we have used our 1200a to convert it to 1080 when we digitized the tapes. The results were very satisfactory. As Robin said the HDX-900 does it in the camera and does get a slightly better horizontal resolution but as he also said you lose a lot of the things that make the VariCam the VariCam. If its good enough for Planet Earth……..
