    Hi all,

I’ve just completed a PAL DVD for the home market, shot HDV1080i50. Edited as ProRes 1080i, so all HD to this point. Exports converted in Compressor to anamorphic PAL. Everything fine and looks lovely.

The client would now like some NTSC DVDs. Soooo…

Easiest way to make SD NTSC clips? Am I right in thinking convert 1080i50 to 1080i60, then use Compressor to make NTSC assets? Or is there a better way (other than a Terranex, budget for this is zero).

Your collective opinion would, as ever, be gratefully received.

    Jason

I would advise yo to use Compressor to go straight from the 1080 50i to the NTSC mpeg2 file for DVDSP. This has been covered a lot on this forum so search for specific recommendations for Compressor settings. This will take a long time to render and won’t look great.

However, I never offer to do this though. When I hear the “zero budget” argument against doing it in real time properly with a Teranex, I realise that the client doesn’t value my time or the quality of the finished product. At that point I usually ask why not and miraculously it either doesn’t need to be done or they find a few hundred bucks to do it properly. If you want to sweat blood and use your time to do reinforce the ignorant belief that it can be done for nix, then go right ahead.

Thanks for the advice, Michael & John. I’ve used Natress’ Standards Converter before, with excellent results – I just don’t have it on my suite. Been meaning to get it for some time so now is the time to spring for it I guess!

Michael, I appreciate what you’re saying about zero budget – this is essentially a favour for a client who is both regular and very good, and whilst I don’t usually do freebies in this climate, with this client, I’m prepared to make an exception!
