I’ve shot footage in 1080i24P for the first time and I’m not exactly clear on the best workflow and settings for my ultimate goal. I’m also seeing some serious interlacing no matter what FCP sequence settings I have.

I initially planned to work in a 960×720 frame size so that if I need to punch in for a close up, I can do it without losing resolution (as the 1280×1080 footage is scaled down to 75%). However, when I place the footage on a 960×720 video track, this the footage needs rendering even in a 23.98 video rate setting.

I also used the Remove Advanced Pulldown in the Tools menu to adjust the video rate from 29.97 to 23.98. I still get interlacing throughout. Should I use this?

The capture settings are DVCPRO HD – 1080pA24 48kHz.

Can someone please advise the best course of action?

I use FCP 5.1.4 (hope to upgrade to 6.0 next month), sounds like you’re on a similar version.

If you look in the FCP browser there are several columns, and in order for FCP to work seamlessly, the following have to have the same settings:
Frame size, Vid Rate, Compressor; Pixel Aspect. (I move my columns around so they are all right next to each other.)

Since all of your footage is in 1080i/24 I suggest editing in those settings. Crop in this resolution; you should be fine.

I’ll also be curious to see how any DVDs you might make appear because I have had problems shooting 720/24pn and then making dvds. It’s a time consuming hassel to put the missing fields back in. I shooting like that and now shoot in 720/30pn. Seems to make a difference.

Thanks for the info. I figured it out for now. Basically, cut in a 1080i workflow then bring it into a 720p workflow when I’m completely finished and render accordingly. When you bring 1080i footage into a 720p workflow it scales the picture down by 75%. This means if I bump it up to 100% I’m getting a close-up in post. That was the original idea but I didn’t anticipate the rendering.

As for 720p 24pn footage into DVD I’ve been shooting quite a bit in that format and making DVDs without any problems. I use compressor to handle the compression and I don’t take any extraordinary measure because of the 24pn. Just make sure you’re shooting in 24pn not 24pa which you’ll need to do a pulldown removal in order to edit in a 29.97 sequence.
