  • 1080i Transcoding to DVD (720 x 480)

I shot some very nice 1080i material today and conducted a little test when I got home. I wanted to see how it looked when I transcoded it to DVD format (that sd dvd 720×480 – not blue ray or hd dvd). The footage looked incredible when I captured it from the Sony HVR-Z1U. However, there WERE a couple of issues when I transcoded it using the Adobe Media encoder for use in Encore.

1st: The transcoded video seems to have some scan lines missing on both the left and right of the screen. i.e.; there are small black strips on the right and left. They don’t show up on a television monitor after I’ve built a DVD but I’m sure that’s because they fall outside of the safe zone. I’m concerned about encoding for Flash.

2nd: Although I shot 16:9 and chose 16:9 in all my transcoded settings, I still get a letterbox even when viewing the material with a 16:9 monitor.

and Oh yeah, there is a third issue: The final transcode and subsequent DVD did not look as good as I expected it to. I realize I’m going to lose a lot transcoding 1080i to 720 x 480 but I didn’t think the degradation would be as much as what I got. Is there a better way to transcode from PP2 for DVD? If I’m not mistaken, I’ve read posts from people who don’t think the Media Encoder available in PP2 is quite up to par. What are some alternatives. I own the Adobe Production Studio so I must have some other options.

Any help would earn my eternal gratitude… and if I did a bad job of describing those black strips (see issue 1) I’d be happy to send a screen capture to someone so they can see for themselves.

    Thanks
    Matt

See if the result from transcoding in camera yields a better result. So export your HDV material as SD DV from the Z1.

Further suggestion: Export your finished project to tape, so you can use it in the future, downconvert the new tape to SD, capture and export with AME to Encore for burning.

That’s probably what I’ll have to do… at least for the short term because I have to have something ready in a few short weeks… however, I’m the type of person that will become obsessed with a problem and spend hours and hours, weeks even trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong— it’s a curse. Did I mention that the same problem does not occur with footage shot and transcoded at HDV 720P?

Thanks fr all of your helpful suggestions. If you think of anything else, let me know.

Hopefully in the next version (CS3) the quality of AME will have been improved.
