1080i PAL to NTSC Options
I have 1080i PAL (50 frame) source footage on a Mini DV HDV tape. I will be editing on a 1080i NTSC sequence, so I need to convert that 1080i PAL tape to a 60 or 30 frame rate before I can start editing my sequence. (Or do I? If I captured at 60 fps, what would that 10 frame difference look like? Would it be a stutter?)
I’m still in FCP 4.5. In the latest versions of FCP, are there any tricks that will help me accomplish what I need to do? For example, is there an HDV capture preset that will allow me to alter the frame rate on ingest, thereby accomplishing the frame conversion during capture? And will that work/ look right? Alternatively, what would happen if I put that 50 fps PAL on a 60 or 30 frame 1080i sequence? Doesn’t FCP 6 convert different formats on a single sequence, or does that not include frame rates?
Any suggestions short of having an expensive standards conversion done at a post house? My end product is a DVD that will play on a 1080i monitor. I cannot edit on a PAL sequence because (to complicate matters more) I’ll be using some old NTSC 30 fps footage inset (not full frame size).
I have access to that Sony Mini DV/ HDV deck that has firewire out and the ability to play both 1080i PAL and 1080i NTSC in one unit. But I don’t think that helps me in getting the source ingested into a frame rate compatible with NTSC frame rate.
