1080i Only From Firwire Port!! OH NO
Posted by Stuart on January 3, 2006 at 6:38 pmI Just heard from a little birdie that the HVX 200 does not, i repeat DOES NOT output any other video format other than 1080i directly from the firewire port. So if you were going to use an external firewire device you will only be able to tranfer at 1080i NOT any of the 720p formats. Please tell me this isnt so !!! Stuart

January 3, 2006 at 6:43 pmI would say that the birdie that told you this, has not finished reading his manual. 😉 In the 720PN modes it does not output to the 1394, but in the 720P modes, as well as all of the SD modes it most definitely does.
Best regards,
Jan

Gee
you need to shoot the bird.I have been doing 720p out and it works like a charm…
maybe they only had 1080i footage.

January 3, 2006 at 8:29 pmFor clarification: it outputs every mode it’s capable of shooting in: DV, DVCPRO50, DVCPRO25, 720p DVCPRO-HD, and 1080 DVCPRO-HD.
The only mode that doesn’t stream to the firewire is the “native” mode 720p footage: 720/24pN and 720/30pN. All other modes (including 720p “over 60”) do stream over the firewire. You can absolutely positively use video capture or firestore or whatever to capture streaming content in 480, 720, or 1080.

Hmmm! Does this mean that the 720PN modes won’t be recordable on the Firestore device and that you will need P2 cards to record these modes?

January 4, 2006 at 6:46 pmokay maybe it’s still not clear enough for me. So can I record 720p at 24 frames per second to a hardrive solution like the firestore model coming soon.

the way I understand it –do to the complex nature of the multiple formats available, the camera sends out a standard video steam out over FW to ‘dumb’ devices (think hard drives)
So whatever comes out of the FW port as a video stream conforms to the standard video spec for the format you choose –same as a conventional video file you send to a tape deck.
The spec for 720p is always 720/60 – no matter what frame rate you shot at (720/50 PAL)
1080 will always go out as 1080i60 (1080i50 PAL)
NTSC will always be 3O (25 for PAL version)Transferring data from a card via the camera to a hard drive, then it transfers the card contents as data (and is very slow)
Devices like the firestore are “smart” and a “smart device” has the ability to receive the native data exactly as the camera sends it, so with the firestore it receives exactly the same data you are sending to the P2card. That also means that FCP will have to import it to use it.

January 4, 2006 at 11:19 pmHi guys,
Sorry for the continuing confusion. The Firewire port only outputs the HD signals that can be recorded by other video devices, like the AJ-HD1200. The Native modes of recording, where only the flagged frames are recorded cannot be output over firewire. So to sum up, the answer is, the firewire cannot output the 720P/24PN footage only the 720P/24P over 60 footage.
Is that clear?
Best,
Jan

Let me take a stab at this. There are multiple recording formats. Yes you could choose 720/24P mode, and record that to the FireStore. However, the firewire output will be 720/60p, with frame flags and duplicate frames inserted to round the sequence up to 60fps, just like the VariCam does.
You can use a post frame-rate-conversion utility to strip-out & discard the duplicate frames, returning you to the native data sequence.
That’s for general firewire. The thing is, the HVX also has a 720/24pN mode where it records just the 24 frames onto the P2 card. That mode does not get output via firewire.
If you record 720/24p mode (“over 60”) on the card, you’ll get one minute per gigabyte. If you record 720/24pN mode on the card, you’ll get two and a half minutes per gigabyte. Presumably the Specialized Communications CinePorter hard-disk recorder will allow you to record the 24pN mode as well, since it connects via the P2 card slot.
If recording the firewire output, that output will be “over 60” mode. If whatever device that captures the file just records it as it’s received, then you’ll also get one minute per gigabyte. Perhaps there’s the possibility for “smart capture” where the drive could parse the incoming data, determine whether it’s a duplicate frame or not, and discard duplicates; in that case you’d only record the pure 24p frames. But that would be a question for the people making the capture device.
