I have a 1080i QT file from a client. QT player indicates the frame rate is 59.94. When I import to Final Cut, the frame rate reads 29.97. When I play it in Final Cut, it plays slow and half the commercial is missing. In order to put the spot to tape, I did a QT conversion and selected 29.97. The resulting file read 29.97 in QT and played fine in Final Cut. I am not sure exactly how to explain the problem to my client. Can anyone provide me an explanation of what the client might have done wrong with the original file?

1080i 59.94 runs at 29.97. The “i” indicates INTERLACED, meaning that the number that follows refers to FIELDS per second…so 59.94 is 60 fields per second, or 30 frames per second, running at 29.97.

Now, why the file from your client acted the way it did…is a mystery. What codec did they provide it as? 1080p60 is 60fps at 59.94. But that is a very RARE and UNCOMMON format. 720p60 at 60fps is more common.

    Forgot to add.

Normally, I would think that the file is just 1080P with a frame rate of 59.94, but it looks interlaced. When I put it into Final Cut, I choose “change the sequence settings to match clip” and the settings change to 1080i, Field Dominance = None, and an editing time base of 29.97. And half of the spot’s video is missing. Also, In Compressor, the file shows up at progressive.

It is a ProRes HQ file. I explained to the client the differences between frames per second and fields per second as well as interlaced vs progressive. I believe it is a 1080P file, I just can’t explain why it looks interlaced and why Final Cut drops half the spot when imported.
