    Sorry guys!

I´ve been checking in the Cow for an answer but I haven´t been able to make up my mind. If there is a specific answer for this already, please just point me to the link.

    The situation is this:

SHOOTING HD: Panasonic HVX205a (in a P2 Card)

Editing in FCS2 running on a PowerMac G5

For a final Transfer to Film we shot, as suggested, 1080i 24pA.

Everything Log and Transfered perfectly. Now the questions are:

What easy set up to use?

    Easy Setup shows:

    Format DVCPRO HD
    Use DVCPRO HD 1080pA24.

(but then states that this setting will be use for Playback Output Video 1080i60 and that the Edit to Tape will be the same as playback?. kind of confusing for me)

For editing should I choose DVCPRO HD 1080p24, or DVCPRO 1080i60? or should I accept the conversion of the sequence when I drop the clip and it asks me to change it? (it changes to Apple ProRes 422 HQ)? or Uncompressed 10bit? which one?

Best format to export to Transfer to Film? I don´t find a 1080i 24pA Codec either…

Uff! sorry or the amount of questions and thanks a lot in advance.

[Omar Estrada] “but then states that this setting will be use for Playback Output Video 1080i60 and that the Edit to Tape will be the same as playback?. kind of confusing for me”

It’s because there’s not a 1080p24 broadcast standard. Native 1080p24 footage is converted to 1080i60 with 3:2 pulldown for broadcast or HD tape formats (with a few exceptions).

Edit and finish in 1080p24. Only convert to 1080i60 w/3:2 pulldown when needed.

[Alan Okey] “It’s because there’s not a 1080p24 broadcast standard.”

Well…true. But certain networks want us to deliver 1080psf 23.98 HDCAM masters. Even though they air it 29.97. I think they do this for ease in conversion to PAL.

    [Omar Estrada] “1080i 24pA Codec either…”
This is a little bit of confusion on Panasonic’s part, the camera list 1080i 24pA but it is shooting 1080 psf 24pA (with the pull down inserted to 60 fields as it writes to the card) when you transfer this into FCP, FCP removes the pull down and joins the fields to give you true 1080p 24p (23.98).

This is the way you want to edit, you want a 1080p23.98 sequence.

For film out ask the place that is doing the film out what they want.

ummm a couple of new questions… sorry:

When I declare the Sequence settings the “default compression” seems to be DVCPRO 1080p30. Is this the one? (I see other options there that sound logical too).

Should I render “RGB” or “10-bi tmaterial in High Precision YUV?

And an extra question (sorry, I´m avoiding to open a new post):

How do I back up the P2 Card Content in a G4?.

I located the information in Panasonic but their solution “Driver Software for Macintosh P2 STORE/PCMCIA card slot/IEEE1394b´ doesn´t seem to work in Powerook G4, that is where we can Log and Transfer due to the reader (we don´t have any other).

I understood (and tried) copying/pasting the Content and txt files into a Hard Drive but it doesn´t work.

Is there a free software for this?

Am I missing something in the one offered by Panasonic? (I mean, do they have a P2 Store Manager that actually runs in PowerBook G4?

Is it necessary to do this backing the actual content as Data from the P2 in a Hard Drive or the QT Wrapped archive produced by Log and Transfer is good enough?

Thanks a lot again and apologies.

It´s the first time I work with the HVX 205a and don´t want to make mistakes.

[Omar Estrada] “When I declare the Sequence settings the “default compression” seems to be DVCPRO 1080p30. Is this the one? (I see other options there that sound logical too). “

Yes. That is the COMPRESSOR type…just like DVCPRO HD 720p24 at 23.98 has the DVCPRO HD 720p60 COMPRESSOR. It is just the format of the clip, not the frame rate.

[Omar Estrada] “Should I render “RGB” or “10-bi tmaterial in High Precision YUV? “

8-bit YUV. DVCPRO HD is an 8-bit codec.

[Omar Estrada] “How do I back up the P2 Card Content in a G4?. “

The same way you do on ANY mac. Although with a Powerbook G4 there is a built in P2 slot.

You either drag and drop the entire contents of the P2 card to a separate folder (name the folder unique names…give them TAPE names, as these are the names that will show up in the REEL information in FCP)…or use offloading software like Shotput P2.

I have an entire workflow tutorial…P2 Workflow with FCP 6…you should watch it.

The P2 card drivers are located at https://www.panasonic.com/P2 in the DOWNLOADS area. And yes, the driver works on G4s. I use my PB for P2 offloading all the time.

[Omar Estrada] “I understood (and tried) copying/pasting the Content and txt files into a Hard Drive but it doesn´t work. “

Don’t do that…ever. No no no. Drag and drop isn’t all that reliable either…you want…need..Shotput Pro. https://www.imaginesoftware.com

[Omar Estrada] “Is there a free software for this? “

Well, yes, but it is pretty user UN-friendly. P2CMS by Panasonic…same link as above. But it doesn’t verify the copy…and I find that is important.

That is software for the P2 Store…a separate device for offloading P2. You don’t need that software unless you have that device.

[Omar Estrada] “m I missing something in the one offered by Panasonic? (I mean, do they have a P2 Store Manager that actually runs in PowerBook G4? “

Do you capture your taped footage then throw away the tapes? You have the captured footage…why keep the tapes, right? You keep the original P2 backup…these are your master tapes. Back these up on two backup drives if you can, one if you can’t (drives are cheap). This way if your media drive fails, or if you need to access the files in another editing application, you have the originals.
