Hey everyone. I’ve got a project that was shot and edited in 1080i 23.98 fsp. Does anyone have a workflow to get it looking great on an SD DVD? Any help is most appreciated as all my attempts look like A#$!! This is the first DVD project I’ve done in a while and the first one shot in 1080i 23.98.

This same question is asked more than once a day and is ALL OVER the forums, but here’s a tutorial:

I appreciate the link Rob, unfortunately it doesn’t give me what I need to output a quality master SD DVD from a 1080i 23.98 timeline. Believe me, I’ve done an exhaustive search and have found nothing that outlines a “best case scenario” for this particular workflow. Thanks for the input though.

Yea it does. DVD encoding is the same no matter what your original’s resolution or frame rate are.

    [Mick Haensler] “1080i 23.98 fsp”

Can you please tell us what frame rate your timeline is? 1080i 23.98 fsp is highly confusing.

Maybe tell us what you’e tried?

Sorry Jeremy, it’s late and I’ve been on this thing all day trying to finish up. My sequence settings for the timeline is 23.98. The original footage was shot in 1080p 23.98fps, the FCP sequence settings always show the aspect ratio as 1080i in the settings box, but the footage is 23.98p with the sequence comformed to that. Haven’t done a DVD in a while so my brain is fogged on this one. Thanks so much for your help. It doesn’t look bad at all for a local production but this has the potential for national distribution so it has to be right.

Thanks for the sequence settings. That makes much more sense.

What exactly isn’t looking right? The menu, the movie? where are you watching the DVD?

I always test things on a worst case scenario. I’m watching it on an old 27″ standard tube TV that I have around for just such a purpose. Lots of jaggies and flickers everywhere, motion stuttering. Also, there’s a fireplace scene and the screen flickers across the entire frame at the fireplace level, similar to when you have white text on a black background and see a dark band all the way across the frame at text level if that makes sense.

And do you use Compressor or Bitvice? What settings did you use? Sorry, just trying not to repeat something you have tried. How long is the piece?

No apologies needed! I just appreciate the help…

The piece is 28 minutes long.

I’m using Compressor. I’ve tried exporting straight from the timeline in a few different formats and then taking that file into Compressor and rendering out at DVD 90 minute best quality. I’ve tried dropping the original sequence into an SD sequence, rendering, and then exporting using “Current Settings” and then going into Compressor and rendering out at DVD 90 minute best quality. I’m missing something here and I just can’t put my finger on it.

    Cool, prefect (or perfect) information.

The way to do it is to Export a reference movie from FCP so:

File > Export > Quicktime Movie

Leave it at current settings, and recompress all frames and make self contained UNchecked.

Then bring that movie in to Compressor.

From here you can use the best quality widescreen preset.

Basically you are making an MPEG2 from your HD movie, no need to make an in between file.
