108024p delivery
Posted by Brad Hodgson on April 6, 2009 at 4:16 pmHi all,
Okay this may be a really stupid question, but thanks in advance for any answer…
With 108024p material, I understand it is captured in a 60i stream… then when brought into FCP, pulldown removed and edited as 24p material… right? THis is Psf material… and so, my question.
We master here at the post house I work at to Dbeta or betasp (or digital delivery)… when we are going back to HD tape, we have another post house master for us. So, what’s the best way for delivery of 108024p file? I know my AJA card will add pulldown on the fly going to dbeta, but if I actually had to give someone a 60i file, becuase it was recorded in a 60i stream, can I nest a 24p sequence in a 108060i one? Will it add pulldown and playback right?
Thank you!

No. It will not properly add the pulldown. It will add duplicate frames to make 24P turn into 29.97. If you want to properly add the pulldown, try using After Effects or playing out of your Kona card at 29.97 and capturing the footage from another computer.

What camera are you using?

April 6, 2009 at 5:27 pmHi Russell,
Thank you for the response… I think I overlooked a very simple solution… I have a Kona card and if I render using the intended Kona preset for output, it should add the correct pulldown for me, correct? I’m not using a specific camera, I guess this was just more of a hypothetical question on getting 108024p HD material to 1080i 29.97 if I need to for mastering. Does this sound like the easiest way to do this?
Thank you!

April 6, 2009 at 7:57 pmThe Kona will add 3:2 pulldown to 23.98 material on play back in 1080 if you set the video output to 1080i29.97 in FCP at a bit depth matching your timeline (8,10,or RGB).

April 6, 2009 at 8:02 pmHi Jeremy,
Thanks for the response… that makes sense. So I can change playback from the FCP view menu to 1080i 29.97 8 bit (or whatever depth)… and then render an UNXD quicktime master with the Kona setting of 1080i 29.97 8 bit from the export menu… right?

There’s no point to render out anything. Edit in 23.98 and then output @ 29.97. Keeps it easy.
Like Russell mentioned, FCP adds incorect pulldown when editing 23.98 material in 29.97 timelines in HD or SD.

April 6, 2009 at 8:26 pmHi Jeremy,
Thanks again… I’m a bit confused though… if I was laying back to tape, this would make sense… but if I am just trying to deliver a 1080i 29.97 quicktime, and I change my video output format, exported via said format, I would have my 1080i 29.97 QT from a source 108024p sequence… right? Or am i still making this too difficult? Thanks to both of you for your help!

Not with the correct pulldown. You will need to use After Effects or Compressor to deliver proper 3:2 pulldown. Or layoff to tape and then recapture that using the method I suggested, or do what I do sometimes and use my Kona to output and then capture with my ioHD to make a digital file, but you need two computers and two input/output devices to do so.

April 6, 2009 at 8:30 pmThe video output only changes the output of the video over the video connections on the card. It doesn’t change any of the rendered files.
FCP can’t add a pulldown. After Effects can.

April 6, 2009 at 8:33 pmOkay. Thanks to both of you… sounds like easiest for me then is to just pull it into AE and export with 3:2 pulldown there as that’s where I normally work… I appreciate it!

April 6, 2009 at 8:50 pmOkay guys, I’m sorry… one more question then… so, in downconverting an HD picture to an SD master on dbeta, I’ve always nested my sequences, then output to tape… but now I feel like I should verify this is in fact the best and most efficient way to do this…
So, if I took a 108024p sequence, nested it in an NTSC sequence and lay that back to tape, the Kona will add the correct pulldown on the fly (assuming obviously my Kona output is set to NTSC 29.97 in my nested NTSC sequence) right?
Thanks again, tons!
