1080 Telecine transfer in 720 timeline
Hello everyone,
I am working on a project that was shot on 35 and when we got it back from the lab, it had black bars down the side of it (not black bars exactly, it’s the edge of the negative) Now my understanding of this is that IF they scanned it higher than 1080, we could’ve just re-composed the shot in a 1080 timeline….but…since the frame is 1080, we now have to go down to 720. I tried to take the 1080 sequence and nest it into a 720 sequence, thinking it would extend beyond the edges and I could just recompose…however…the 720 sequence asks “Do you want the sequence to match….” and no matter which option I select, it changes to a 1080 sequence. Can someone advise me on what my next step should be?

How much larger do you need to make it? I’d not cram it down to 720 if I could just expand it a touch. Likely will look better doing that than squeezing it down I’d think as long as we’re only talking about a small amount. LIke under 105 or so in the scaling slider.
But that said, create the 720 sequence, then copy and paste the clips from the 1080 to it. It should not ask you to change it’s settings, or put a clip that is 720 (bars should work OK in fact) into that 720 sequence, then the next clip will not be the first.

What is your deliverable? Work backwards from that.
Also, you will generally have an easier time of it if you cut 1080 in a 1080 sequence. You can always copy & paste it into a 720 sequence when you lock picture.
