1080 dilemma. 23.98 or 29.97?
Okay, got another zinger for ya. I just receive a FCP project from someone that was not very organized nor frame rate aware. I have very little time to correct the errors and re-edit. Good news is that most of the clips have already been marked for In’s and Out’s. Here’s my dilemma.
The piece edited has a mix of live action and screen capture from web. Live action being 23.98 shot from a Canon 7D. Screen capture and Animation codec transitions being mostly 29.97.
The project was built in 1080 but for some reason the sequence settings chosen are odd. He chose, 1440×1080 HDV 1080i60 at 29.97 Upper field first. He didn’t transcode any of the footage to ProRes, so the Canon footage is still in H.264. This footage makes up about 80% of the timeline with transitions, screen capture and text being the other 20%.
For my new edit, would it make sense to build a new sequence @ 1920×1080, square pixels using ProRess 422 at 23.98 fps? I’m really okay with the H.264 files, even though they’re not ideal and realize I’ll have to render. With 80% of the footage being 23.98, should I use this as my sequence settings? How will FCP handle the 29.97 material in the 23.98 timeline?
Would it be better to edit in 29.97 or 60i even though FCP won’t add in the correct pulldown to the 23.98 material.
Going back to transcode all the footage to ProRes really isn’t an option at this point because their are about 200 clips and there’s very little time. My tower should be able to take the punishment from the H.264 files. Final sequence is only about 2 minutes.
