  • 101 level question about making presets.

I’m making a series of informational videos and there are 3 elements that I use over and over again. A small circle shape layer with a 50% fill and a 2 px stroke and a popup expression, a solid layer with a path and a stroke effect, and a bit of text that “typewriters” on. I use these to callout particular features of a product.
I have to build each of these in each project that I do, it’s not hard but I’d love to be able to store these as presets or existing elements that I can add to any project. Duplicating them within the project is no problem. I always use the three elements the same way so saving all three together would be even awesomer. Then I wouldn’t have to do anything but move the paths around and retype the text. Plus they’d be more consistent from video to video.
I’m on a Intel Mac with CS3. Projects are completely contained in AE.

    Thanks all.

you can’t have an animation preset that creates layers (or masks/paths on layers), just apply effects and settings to existing layers… so presets may not be the way to go here.

you could create a ‘master comp’ with the layers you need and the effects and settings. then just duplicate that comp in the project window, open it, drag in new video and set you text and any other tweaks. that would seem to be a pretty quick workflow.

you could create a script (java script) that can create layers, add effects and set various settings, but scripts are not as easy to create as animation presets or photoshop actions, you actually need to write java (or, i believe, apple script on mac or visual basic on windows). it’s not something i could help you with, but you can find others who can on the expressions forum.

That’s just what I wanted to know. I’ll have a look around over in the expressions forum. Thanks.
