April 12, 2012 at 11:33 amOliver: I’ve got an 8 core 2009 tower with a 4870 card . Have had a lot of performance issues with 10,0.3 and thinking of upgrading to the 5870 card. Sounds like you have had a good experience with 10.0.3 in terms of performance with the 5870 card?

April 12, 2012 at 11:53 amYes, I’ve been happy with the 5870 card. This machine started with the GT120 and then I upgraded. I had some occasional video hash on start-up (fixed with a restart), but that went away when I upgraded to Lion. Performance with FCP X has generally been good with all updates. Only sluggishness is with Motion titles on the timeline (if I have several overlapping) and some of the 3rd party plug-ins. I generally run with no rendering. I also have 16GB RAM installed.

April 12, 2012 at 11:57 amThanks for the info. One last question: did you get the Apple version of the card or go with the non-apple version. I’ve heard the only difference is you don’t get the apple boot screen with the non-apple version.
As a side note, I’ve heard the new .4 update generally helps performance but I can’t go there yet as I need Magic Bullet Looks (the Cosmo tool for wrinkles) on a current project and the new update breaks the link with MB Looks.

I bought it from the Apple Store online, so I guess that would be the Apple version.

I believe it broke all plug-ins that send the image to an external interface. This mans both MB Looks and Sapphire Edge are broken. They sort of work, but the “sent” image is upside down. Unrendered performance with these is terrible. Both companies are aware and working on fixes. Other such filters, like the DFT products have never worked correctly in FCP X.

Try using the new Makeup Artist plug-in from Sheffield Softworks available through FXFactory 3.0.3. In my view it is a very big improvement on Cosmo and it should work now.

April 12, 2012 at 2:15 pmHmm. I’ll have to give it a try. In general, I really like the FX Factory concept and some of the specific plug ins. However, I was having major performance issues on a recent multi cam project and out of desperation, uninstalled FX Factory.
I wonder–anyone using 10.0.4 with FX Factory? Everything copasetic?

Did uninstalling FXFactory make a difference?

April 12, 2012 at 3:25 pmNope. It was a desperate move (after trashing prefs, copying projects, etc).
I was on the phone a lot with apple and even uploaded files. I was using 100mbps XDCAM from a nana flash, that X chose not to/did not need to optimize to pro res (I think that might have been the issue).
I did get a big gain in performance when I inadvertently put my project file on my internal system drive (it had been on an external eSata drive, along with the event). It’s the old FCP7 paradigm for organization, which I had thought was moot with X.
That said, under .03, still got lots of crashes and beach balling. I am eager to upgrade to .04 but am in the middle of two projects so will wait a bit (and I’m not sure the sheffield plugs work with X so still need MB Looks/Cosmo).

Yes, this particular one works especially well in FCPX.
