    Hi,
    I’m ready to make the jump into the 64 bit world, moving from Vegas 8 to 9…. need some new hardware to go along. Even though I know a laptop is probably not the best value, that’s the direction I’ve been looking. I’d like to get something that will power as smooth a Vegas preview window as possible with HD and effects. Wanted to get some feedback from anyone familiar with this system to see what you think.

    ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A2 17-Inch Gaming Laptop
    1.6GHz Intel i7-720QM Quad-Core Processor
    8GB DDR3 1066MHz;
    1TB (500G 7200RPM x2) HDD; Super-Multi DVD Drive;
    17.3-Inch Full HD LED Display; ATI 5870 Graphics with 1G GDDR5; Windows Home Premium 64-bit Operating System

    Would be glad to get other recommendations, laptop or desktop, for good system to do some moderate HD editing – budget is around $1600. Thanks for any feedback – Tod

    I’m interested in the responses as Im thinking along the same lines, especially since a recent job had me going to a remote site and editing news segments for a quick turnaround, and my existing dual-processor laptop barely huffed and puffed it’s way through. And that was for sd. What’s the maximum ram on that computer?

    I am not sure you will get smooth playback on a laptop without having 8 GBs RAM and all video files on an external eSATA. So that might narrow your choices down. I’m running on a Samsung new R580 w/4GBs 64 bit laptop with 512 GB video card, Vegas 9e and an external eStata and still get choppy video playback. I do NOT have the same problems with an 8 GB desktop with the same eSata plugged in and everything else the same. So go figure.

    (I posted a very similar question to this myself, and here’s the conclusion I came to:)
    I was looking at the G73 myself. Seriously awesome computer, from the look and feel of it, PLUS the fact that it upgradable to 16GB ram. BUT, no firewire, eSata, or USB 3.0. . .which, from what I can tell, is probably what you’re going to need if you require so much computing power in the first place.
    I’ve even written Asus a few times on this issue–and I’ve seen other editors lament this fact–but I haven’t heard much from them.
    I went ahead and purchased an Asus g51-series–the g51jx-x5 from B&H, to be exact. I just got it, and haven’t yet done anything ‘graphical’ on it, but so far it’s a MONSTER. Just SOLID. The screen’s a little smaller–15.6″–and it’s only upgradable to 8Gb. But, in my opinion, it’s not a bad choice if you’re keeping portability in mind. I think I’d rather lug around a somewhat smaller machine and have a high power desktop for really extensive functions than have a laptop so big that it’s a pain to carry anyway.

    Actually, from reading off the Vegas forum, I’m more concerned about Vegas 9 these days than I am with the laptop.

    But, like I said, I still gotta run some tests on it. But unless I have any problems (which I doubt, and will post if I do), consider this to be my recommendation.

    Thanks all for the feedback… after considering everything, I think I’m going to go with a desktop after all – Tod

    Good call…unless you really need the portability.
    I tried it on my laptop, and the heat issues just shut me down.
    So laptop only if you really need the portability.

    FYI, this is the system I ended up ordering from Newegg ….

    Gamer Extreme 933i Intel Core i7 930(2.8GHz) 12GB DDR3 1TB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 ($1250), added an intel 80gb SSD ($215) for the OS and programs

    With this processer, ram and the SSD, hopefully it should be strong for video editing with Vegas. – Tod
