what should i be converting my files to so they can be edited in vegas 9? Ive seen several suggestions from freeware to sorenson squeeze 9 as suggested software, but all these programs have many options as to what type of file you can render to, and many options in each of those files as the settings and parameters. What does sony want the files to be, and what will get me good quality video. Im shooting 1280×720 in the canon

Sony edits most camcoder formats natively. If it won’t edit yours then I would use Cineform.

the canon t1i shoots mov files. i have found several programs that can convert mov to avi or whatever, but i dont know what i should be converting them to, and what settings within that program i should be converting them to. mov files tend to bottleneck in vegas. the stuttering is hard to overcome when your editing. When i converted to avi the quality was very low (but it played without stuttering..i guesss thats something)

Mov files are NOT a bottleneck in Vegas. I use them all the time in my work. The bottleneck is that your still camera shoots a non-standard video format. If you used a camcorder that shoots HDV or AVCHD you wouldn’t be having these problems.

As I said in my previous post, you should look into Cineform NeoScene and see if it will convert your footage into Cineform intermediaries. It supports the Canon 5D/7D format so it’s worth a try. Otherwise you can try free converters like AviDemux 2.5 and convert your footage to Lagarith, Huffyuv or MJPEG AVI files.

Another option is not to transcode but rather use DVFilm EPIC with your t1i files to edit in Vegas. You get realtime editing without transcoding.
