uneven audio track levels
I am told that Sony Video Vegas Studio has the ability to correct a audio track that for me and others, has highs and lows and making the track un-uniform. I have been recording Quicktime movies using a Q3 Zoom Recorder that has automatic level control. Unfortunately their auto level circuitry isn’t working properly and I have a number of movies that have audio level problems.
I will appreciate help in doing this if it is possible. I am a newbie to Vegas Movie and have 15 days left of the trial version to play with. I would gladly buy the program providing it works. Is it possible to correct the audio problem ? If so could someone help me ?
If it is possible to do this, does the audio track have to be separated from the video or could it be done grouped.

In Vegas Movie, you’ll need to set the Normalization per event. In Vegas Pro, you can set Normalize levels with scripts.

Could you please elaborate what you are suggesting. Is the event the whole track ? I am new to this and will appreciate knowing what steps I should take.

If all your audio is on the same track, right click in the audio track header to the left and add volume envelope. You’ll see a blue line through the audio track. You can double click on this line to add points. You can raise and lower these and areas between by dragging the points or lines between them up or down to match their levels. I got the blue line going thru the complete audio track but when I click on the blue line to add points, nothing is happening. Could you please explain this to me. I also am not sure what you mean I can raise or lower these areas by dragging the points or lines to match them up or down to match the levels.Thanks

Double click on the line to add points. Drag the line between the points and drag the points to move them.

Ok, Let’s say you have a part that’s too loud. Double click and add four points, two of them just before the loud part and two of them just after the loud part. Now click once on the line in the middle between points two and three and drag the line down. This will bring the part that’s too loud down. Drag it down until the loud part matches the rest. You can do the same for a quite part except drag the line up to match that part to the rest. pretty cool huh?

Would matching the size of the wave form be a indication that the sound levels are all equal ? I see from your suggestion that of points, that one could go through the entire audio track and by adding points te way you suggest one can make the entire track even. I assume that the reverse would apply to make the entire audio track louder. Do I still have to use the audio envelope in order to see the blue line ?

I highlighted the audio track, did shift+v, got the blue line right across the width of the audio track and then added points to the left and to the right where the volume got lower.I see that once I added points I could move the left poit to butt up right next to the first point on the left. I did the same for the right points. When I clicked in the center between the two inside points, it stated 0db. I dragged the blue line in between the two inside points and saw that it was 7.0db less but I do not see the hight of the envelope getting smaller. I clicked again the audio track and it was white but the size of the envelope didn’t change at all. What mightI be doing wrong ? This is a great idea if it would work.
Is there a way where I can mae the audio waveform larger so I could move the point right where the sound track starts ?

You can make the wave track bigger so you can see the wave by putting your curser at the bottom of the track header and dragging down, or put the points where you need them before you lower the volume so you can still see the wave good.
