move event
Posted by Dirk Wellekens on April 22, 2010 at 6:36 pmHi,
I suppose it is possible to just drag and drop an event to place it somewhere else on the timeline in between 2 other events. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to do that. When I move the clip, it ends on top of one of 2 adjacent clips and not in between 2 clips.
Thanks

April 22, 2010 at 9:48 pmJust activate ripple edit (the button in the toolbar or Ctrl L) and it will work how you want it to work

April 23, 2010 at 11:32 amI tried this before, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work:
1) when I select an event and drag it, all following events are moved as well
2) In addition, when I move it, it just ends on top of the other eventDirk

April 23, 2010 at 12:44 pmIf you are dropping it in the middle of an event and expecting Vegas to split the event apart for you, that’s not going to happen. You must use the ‘S’ key to split the event and then drop the new event on the split point with Ripple Edit on and Vegas will insert the event at the split point and move the other events to the right to make room.

April 23, 2010 at 2:11 pmI am not at expecting Vegas to split an event for me. What I do is:
1)I put 4 events on the timeline
2) I drag event #3 to the split point between 1 and 2Result: event #3 (and 4 – they remain together even though I only select #3) overlap event #2 when I have Auto Ripple (CTRL L) on. When I have Auto Ripple off, the same happens, but only event #3 overlaps #2. Event #4 gets not selected when selecting #3). In neither case event #3 is put in between 1 and 2. Is there any other setting that needs to be changed?

April 23, 2010 at 2:33 pmAfter your events are on the timeline, enable Auto Ripple, click on event #2 and slide it to the right enough to create a large gap, disable Auto Ripple, click and drag event #3 into the empty space, enable Auto Ripple, click on event #2 and drag it to the left to fill in the gap and then click on event #4 and drag it to the right to fill in the gap.
Disable Auto Ripple. -

April 23, 2010 at 2:57 pmThat’s how I figured it out initially. However, I was a Pinnacle Studio user for years, where you could simply drag and drop an event to the split point. That’s why I assumed this is also possible with vegas.
Mike, the solution you propose, is that a work-around or is it nevertheless possible to just drop and drag?

April 23, 2010 at 4:03 pmApologies for making this way too complicated.
A light bulb just went off and I remembered the easy way to do this.
It’s called Shuffle and here’s how it works.
Right-click and drag clip #3 between clips #1 & 2.
From the shortcut menu, choose Shuffle Events.
BTW, Auto Ripple does not need to be active to shuffle events.
