  • How do you get a smooth zoom with pan/crop?

Posted by Terry Esslinger on April 19, 2010 at 11:15 pm

As the subject states, how? I take a scanned picture either .psd or .png at 1440 x 960 and put it on the timeline. I then zoom event pan/crop or I pan using track motion. The preview usually looks fairly smooth and of course gets a little rougher at higher quality. But when I render the scene out as .mov or .avc the movement of the zoom is very jerky (I don’t mean the difference between the smooth and linear settings) and irregular. If I render it out as Mainconcept MPG2 it actually looks pretty good. But if someone wants it as a Quicktime file I’m in trouble. What am I doing wrong. I usually make DVDs so I don’t run into this problem very often but its very disconcerting when I do. Any help?

Are you sure that the video is jerky and it’s not your PC that can’t play back the MOV or AVC codec you are using? The rendered video should be just as smooth as the DVD’s you make. Again, it could be your PC that can’t play it back smooth.

I have had the SAME THING happen with my videos, I do a zoom or pan in Pan/crop and it is jerky and sometimes interlaced (even with Reduce interlacing on). This happens when I am using pictures for that “Ken Burns” look. It does it with M2T, (1080i and 720p), Mpeg 2 and WMV, and the odd part they are often in different pictures depending on format. Also, 9d STILL throws me memory errors..again when I am working with pictures (jpeg and PNG)this is REALLY starting to get old!

    John,
I have been wondering that myself. I have not been able to get to my regular editing PC (an i7 8G box with V9) but have been having to make due with a P4 (single core)2.0 2G and V7 for this project. (But both have multiple 7200 harddrives). I think I will render a small portion of the project and then transfer it to a flash drive and take it to my sons computer (a quad core)and see how it plays there. It will take a couple of days, I’ll report back.
    Thanks.
