    I have a problem with .PNG image sequence in Vegas Pro 9.0 (64-bit).
    The .PNG properties are: RGB 24 bit with Alpha channel.
    I have an image sequence of 500 .PNG files.
    When opened as image sequence – the preview is much darker than it must be (also when rendered into any video format).
    When opened as separate files, for example: just one .PNG image – the preview is fine, so gamma is not changed (correct gamma).
    When I use .TGA (32 bit) for image sequence – there is no problem as well. TGA is not an option for this project, I need .PNG to work correctly.

    I can fix the darker gamma by changing the Project Properties -> Pixel Format to ‘8-bit’, but I need it to be ’32-bit floating point (full range)’.
    Is it a common problem in Vegas 9.0 Pro, when the .PNG image sequence + 32-bit Pixel format = darker/incorrect gamma? Or I can fix it somehow?

    It is not a Vegas problem. First of all, is your monitor correctly calibrated for still images? If it is not, you do not know whether or not they are accurately adjusted for luminance. In my experience, Gamma is not usually a consideration in a correctly calibrated display for still images.

    If your monitor is correctly calibrated for still images, video WILL look like it is too dark. That is due to the fact that you have moved into a different set of standards. However, when you render and burn the video and display it on something like a TV, it will look significantly brighter. It is the difference in standards which causes the difficulty, but it is not a problem within Vegas.

    Thanks for your answer!
    I use standard ‘all purpose’ TFT Monitor.

    Please see the attached images.
    The brighter (correct) image is a preview from One .PNG used as ‘still image’ in Vegas;
    The Darker image (incorrect) is a preview from several .PNG as ‘image sequence’.


    As you can see the ‘brightness+contrast’ jump like crazy in the same project and with the same .PNGs used.
    Is there a way to make them both look the same in Vegas Preview?
    So I can continue working on the project and add effects and so on?
    I can not do it right now, because it will look terribly different in Vegas Preview window.

    There is no such thing as a “standard all purpose monitor” except, perhaps, in marketing claims. If you do not correctly calibrate your display (that requires a dedicated hardware device plus an OS that accepts the correction file), you can never be sure that anything will be accurately displayed on your monitor. Your problems do not originate in Vegas. Without proper calibration, you cannot have any confidence in what your monitor is showing you. It also means that you will have even less chance to adjust the video so that it displays correctly on video devices.

    It’s not about monitor…
    Can you see that the two images (in my previous post) look different?

    The monitor doesn’t matter if two images are different. Even if monitor is not calibrated correctly, or even if it’s the worst monitor ever – you can still see that the images are different. If one image is brighter and another is darker – you will see that on any monitor.
    It’s about how Vegas shows me (render in Preview Window) these images, not the monitor.

    Or am I wrong?

    I have a similar problem. But it is with all videos in Vegas 9 64. In Vegas monitor the contrast is different than in any other player when rendered. I use VLC basically.

    It is not only with PNG, any video looks different in Vegas 64 than in any player after rendering. The contrast and tone is clearer in Vegas.

    I know the solution that might help:
    Go to: Options -> Preferences -> Preview Device -> Turn On the “Use color management” -> Select the needed profile from the “Monitor color profile:”.
    The contrast will still be a little bit higher in Vegas “Video Preview” Window, but it will be much better and correct.

    I don’t know about the PNG gamma issue…

    When you preview video in the Vegas preview window (not the external preview monitor) Vegas is drawing the frames onto your screen and they are affected by your desktop color settings (profile, gamma etc).

    When you view the video in a player like VLC, MPC or Windows Media Player, it’s probably being rendered using the video card’s overlay feature (or by video card acceleration) and it does not get affected by the desktop gamma/color settings. Some video card drivers have separate color controls for video, and some players have their own controls. In addition, some drivers and/or media players try to convert TV levels to PC levels (or vice versa) for viewing on a PC, so the video may appear darker or more contrasty. You can simulate this in Vegas by putting the Levels effect in the video output FX and selecting the “Studio RGB to Computer RGB” preset.

    Thanks a lot. It is working now. The direct studio RGB to computer did not match exactly, but adjusting it a bit I got the point.
