Hey, Im new to these forums and im using Vegas Pro 8.0. Im editing a video where i have one clip with a HUD from a video game on it, and the other clip is from a movie. My goal is to mask out the gameplay behind the HUD and put the HUD ontop of the movie clip. Any advise on how to preform this?( Im much more trained in final cut, and masking is done in points, does it work similar in vegas?)

There are several ways to create masks in Vegas. To make simple key-frameble masks, you can use the Cookie Cutter FX in the FX tab.
To create key-frameble masks with a pen-tool, you can use the EVENT PAN/CROP tool. Or you can create black/white/greyscale masks in a program like photoshop and use it as a mask by applying the MASK GENERATOR FX (also in the FX tab). And ofcourse there is the spicemaster plugin which can also be used to create motion masks.

I would go into event Pan/Crop and use the Mask tool. This may be very similar to what you are use to in FCP. You can create points and draw a Bezier curve to cut out the mask.
