Can Vegas be made to fully import xvid .avi’s WITH sound?
Hi everyone!
I’m desperately trying to make vegas open xvid .avi files WITH fully working video AND sound. I know vegas doesn’t like xvid, I know vegas doesn’t like some mp3 tracks in xvid avi’s, yet I’m trying as I’m in a situation where I have to convert HEAPS of xvid avi’s to finish my project.
I’m using the x64 version of vegas.
I’ve also installed the 64bit version of ffdshow.In this setup I end up in this:
– Some XVID .AVI’s open with both video and audio as expected, and it works fine on the timeline, but when I open the clip in the trimmer the video freezes after abit while the audio keeps playing.– Quite a few XVID .AVI’s result in video only but no audio, even though the audio is in mp3 (is it VBR perhaps? which I know vegas hate at times)
32bit vs 64bit:
Trying the very same in 32bit vegas instead I get a little further, here the files that featured video and audio works in the trimmer aswell without freezing, but it doesn’t open the ones where the audio isn’t read at all. Of course ffdshow is installed in 32bit aswell in this test.
This is the best I can achieve with xvid import and it just won’t cut it. Does anyone here have any solution to get these darn xvid’s FULLY working in vegas or is it just to give it up? It feels like it’s so close, and mpeg4 files work just fine when we’re not talking xvid.

Give up. It doesn’t work. Stop wasting your time. Find any of a number of free video converters and convert your Xvid’s to something Vegas can edit and get on with your project. Xvid and DivX are highly compressed, low bit-rate delivery formats. Stop trying to edit them. If they are SD videos I would use AviDemux and convert them to MJPEG AVI.

An answer to you, AND myself 😉
First: Yes, I know, it’s insane trying to edit them directly, but I still tried considering I’d have to convert several hours of xvid material which would take such a long time.
Now, to the answer to myself, and EVERYBODY ELSE trying to do this, despite all the good advice against:
These are the facts on xvid videos in Vegas:
1: Vegas doesn’t handle VBR MP3 tracks in videos, there is no codec that to my knowledge can be installed that replaces vegas built in mp3 plugin (not one that handles the mp3 in .avi’s anyway). If your XVID contains VBR audio (or any .avi file for that matter) your best bet is to either convert the whole file into something else or extract just the audio and import this on the side into vegas.
2: Vegas 64bit doesn’t go along nicely with ffdshow 64bit, no matter which version of ffdshow you try. There’s an incompatibility somewhere between them that causes the trimmer window to freeze the video when importing xvid .avi’s directly (the timeline works as expected). The 32bit of vegas combined with the 32bit version of ffdshow doesn’t have this problem. Reason? Not sure, but 64bit video codecs so far is a little of hit or miss. Solutions: the original xvid codec in 64bit version DOES work correctly with the 64bit version of vegas, and if you really really know what you’re doing you can make this coexist with ffdshow but I’m warning you: you’re gonna need some good knowledge in how to configure this kind of setup.
3: Save yourself the trouble with all this and just convert the clips first as proposed by the previous writer. I just provide you with these findings to help anyone else that just MUST drop the files directly into vegas. Hopefully google will index this page because there is alot of erroneous information about these problems out there.
John: I’m giving up and going with option 3 here, convert the files. Thanks for your reply, I hoped to get further with this but it just wasn’t possible.
