  • How to create 3D fog or depth in AE with 3D layers.

How can I achieve fog/depth in AE.
I am not using a 3D program. I am trying to achieve this all in AE using 3D layers and a 3D camera.
One would think that the 3D Channel effects like “3D Fog” and “Depth Matte” would be straight forward and do the trick, but no, I can’t seem to get any effect out of them.

Please can someone help me with this problem.

If you need more information please ask.

If I could attache my file for someone to look at I would.

3D Fog and Depth Matte are made to interact with rendered 3D images with embedded Z-space depth.
After Effects, does not do this itself.

There’s a plug-in called ‘Buena Depth Cue’ that will do this and more.

Do you have a depth matte already? If you do, you could create some fog with CC particle world (directional axis, large slow moving particles, zero gravity, very low opacity, blurred out), then maybe add some fine grain to it for a little realism. Then use your depth matte as a track matte for the fog layer. You may have to tweak the levels of the depth matte so your fog isn’t completely transparent in the foreground.

If you don’t have a depth matte already, you could create one with a Plugin (Depth Que), or manually do it by duplicating your comp, and using the fill/ramp effects on all your layers. You would have to know exactly what a depth matte is suppose to look like when doing it though. You can look for tutorials on creating depth mattes, they are available from a variety of places.

Jon, thanks for your contribution. When AE3.5 introduced depth effects using z-axis layer information form 3D apps, I was under the impression that the information was basically just a grayscale image. The darker the gray, the more fog, diffusion, blur, or darkness was applied by the filters.
but I haven’t opened ay of those filters since they came out and I try not to even think about having to learn a 3D app.

Just back from reading and re-reading the AE help pages on 3d channel effects.
    Good place to start.
    I was sooo wrong.
