Vegas in Newsroom?
Posted by Joshua Sheehan on February 18, 2010 at 5:57 pmHi Everyone,
Does anyone here have experience with Vegas as a Newsroom solution? We are currently running AVID and FCP with budget constraints pushing us towards VEGAS as an upgrade solution.
I am in the process of digging into it now, but I’m concerned about the interface and speed. We have to get things turned very quickly and working on the AVID allows us as users to edit extremely fast. Does anyone have any experience with this platform turning News? And what are your thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

February 18, 2010 at 6:06 pmI have a tremendous amount of experience with Vegas in a newsroom ranging from ABC Nightline to Comcast Sports Network to several chains, as well as mobile trucks uploading from Vegas timeline.
What specifically do you want to know? You can cut in Vegas faster than in any other app if you know much about the app, and you don’t have to unlearn most of your AVID shortcut tools such as rolling edit, slips, inserts, etc.

February 18, 2010 at 6:26 pmI use Vegas in an environment where we take clips off cable television, clip them, and put them online. We deal with a huge volume and rapid turnaround times.
On this topic… does anyone use Vegas with a Media Asset Manager like a traditional news environment would have? Right now we have 3 machines all recording the same footage locally, very redundant.
We would love to have 1 live stream that we could pull down from.

February 18, 2010 at 9:46 pmThanks for the quick response. Your resume obviously enforces the idea Vegas is a workable solution.
As far as specifics, I’ve been bouncing around Vegas all day and was able to solve some interface problems with the preference options, but I’m still having an issue with a few other key items:
We edit multiple stories in the span of a day, currently we borrow, and duplicate, and re-edit several sequences from within one project. How would you deal with cutting around 40 news elements a day? Would I have to open or nest a project for each instance I want a new timeline?
Is there anyway to quickly scrub the timeline without adding a new in point and selecting a new region?
I discovered how to turn off grouping, but can I seperate audio channels 1 and 2 and patch route them to different tracks on the timeline?
Last but not least, I can’t find the option to scrub audio frame by frame within the trimmer window. I can move frame by frame on the video, there has to be a key that enables the user to hear the audio.
Wow, that’s alot of questions. I have searched the manual and online for the answers, but haven’t found them.
Thanks so much for any help. It’s truly appreciated!

Yes, each edited version is a separate .veg file. Just import the .veg file and you will have the edited content ready on your timeline. (This assumes that you are all working from a shared server.)
“Is there anyway to quickly scrub the timeline without adding a new in point and selecting a new region?”
Yes, just use the J,K,L buttons to rewind or fast forward through the timeline without affecting in-out points.
“I discovered how to turn off grouping, but can I seperate audio channels 1 and 2 and patch route them to different tracks on the timeline?”
Right click on any audio track and you have a number of options on how to select the audio channel you want.

Vegas does not excel in this area. I relied on the type of editing you are describing for years but gave it up in Vegas. I learned to rely on the waveform and trimming to get what I want. There are ways to come close to what you want though. For example if you hold down the control button in Vegas while scrubbing the playhead in the trimmer you will hear audio. Still, it doesn’t work that well. You can also get a Contour Shuttle Pro (which I have and do recommend) that comes much closer to approximating what you want with the shuttle knob but still I rely on the waveforms mainly.
