Render as..
Hi there, Im new to editing with HD video and have recently purchased Sony Vegas 9. I have a LOT of footage shot with my Panasonic HDC-300, but even though I have a new decent laptop with video card, I cant smoothly play back the mts files. There are alot of shots from my trip that I want to at least trim and then begin the process of sorting and organizing the clips. If I add a clip, then select ‘render as’ does it reduce the video quality substantially? I still want the quality to be as high as possible (and still in HD), but when an MTS file is in the Vegas playback it stutters.. so when I tried a render as mpg or avi, reloaded it, it could play smoother. Is this the long process that has to be taken?
I realize this is a novice post, I searched and have watched tutorials, but often the tech speak loses me right off the bat.

Any time you render, you lose quality. If it’s MTS, you run a risk of losing a lot of quality. My recommendation is to render to .mxf for best balance between quality loss and bitrate.

Douglas – many many many thanks for that advise. I have just now had a chance to play with Vegas a little more. I loaded an mts (or m2ts) file into vegas, rendered as mxf, then loaded the mxf file to clip bits of it off.
For video clips that dont require HD quality, would you recommend rendering it as AVI or MPG? I put 1minute 21seconds of mts into an mxf (to edit split and trim), then made it into an AVI. From mxf to avi the file size went from 315mb to 294mb only.
