  • Select Audio Stream for Rendering

Posted by Christoph Kurpinski on February 6, 2010 at 10:21 am

I have AVCHD files with 1 video and 2 audio streams (5.1 2ch and 5.1 6ch). Both streams are visible in the timeline and can by easy selected for editing.
My problem occurs by rendering. In this case the “Stream 1” (5.1 2ch) is selected by default but I need “Stream 2” (5.1 6ch).

How I can select “Stream 2” as default for rendering (in ac3)?
Or how I can delete “Stream 1” from my project?

I use Vegas Movie Platinum 9.0b.

I don’t have Vegas Movie Studio but in Vegas Pro you only get one stream or the other. I have never seen both. If you set your project audio to 5.1 Surround you get 4 tracks of audio (FL/FR, RL/RR, Center, & LFE). If your project is set to stereo then you just get the L/R stereo stream. Make sure that you project audio is set to 5.1 surround.

You right – in the timeline you have only one audio stream visible. But with right-click on the stream you can switch between stream-1 and stream-2 (both streams are in 5.1 surround format).

Unfortunately only stream-1 is taken for rendering and this stream contains “down-mixed” content of stream-2.

I have uploaded a sample AVCHD file at https://www.esnips.com/web/AVCHDStuff/

How are you rendering? Perhaps your render options are using stereo audio instead of 5.1 surround?

The whole story is really confusing. I do following steps:

    1. Import Panasonic AVCHD-Files with one Video stream (1920x1080i, 25 fps) and two Audio streams in Dolby AC-3 (both in 48 kHZ, 5.1 Surround), first one as Stereo-Downmix and second one as full 6 channels.

    2. Rendering as Sony AVC (AVCHD 1929×1080 PAL 5.1 Surround). The resulting *.mp4 file contains also one Video stream (1920x1080i, 25 fps) and two Audio streams AC-3 in 5.1 Surround. So far seems to be OK!

    3. Reimporting this mp4-File in Vegas. The result is supprising:
    – Video stream is OK!
    – First Audio stream (5.1 Surround) conatains 6 channels but with normalized content
    – Second Audio stream (5.1 Surround) contains 2 channels only

By the way – DVDAPro recognize only the first Audio stream.

Yea, I’m getting a little confused about what it is you are trying to do so now that you have given me more information, let’s go back to your original question:

How I can select “Stream 2” as default for rendering (in ac3)?
Or how I can delete “Stream 1” from my project?

AVCHD will always contain two audio streams. One is 5.1 Surround and the other is 2 channel Stereo. You can’t delete one. This is for backward compatibility with stereo systems. Like I said, if you set your project to 5.1 Surround Sound, Movie Studio will bring in the correct stream.

By the way – DVDAPro recognize only the first Audio stream.

DVD Architect Pro will also bring in the correct stream depending on your project settings. If it is bringing in the stereo stream, I’m guessing that you have your project properties set to Stereo in DVD Architect. Set your project properties to 5.1 Surround and DVD Architect will bring in the 5.1 stream.

BTW, How did you get DVD Architect Pro if you are using Movie Studio? I thought DVD Architect Studio came with Movie Studio and the Pro version was only available with Vegas Pro. (just curious)

    Hi John,

First answer – I have 30-day trial version of DVDA Pro.
Second answer – I would like to create and burn Blurays in 1920×1080 PAL with 5.1 Surround sound – with other words – I would like to utilize the full video and audio information from my AVCHD source.

Unfortunately my Panasonic camcorder generates two 5.1 Surround audio streams – first one as stereo “down-mix” and second one with full 6 channel information. Vegas is properly importing both 5.1 audio streams but I don’t find the way how to bring both streams or at least the full 6 channel stream on the Bluray.
If you like to make some exercise – I have uploaded small sample of such AVCHD file at https://www.esnips.com/web/AVCHDStuff/

Have you burned a Blu-ray disc and is it not 5.1 Surround? DVD Architect does not show 4 tracks of audio like Vegas does. It just shows one track that looks like stereo but the track header has the 4 speakers (one in each corner) showing that it’s surround. Are you seeing this? If so, burn a disc and see if your get 5.1 when you play it back on your surround system.

If you had Vegas Pro you could render the audio separately as AC3 5.1 Surround and drop that into DVD Architect. This will definitely give you the 5.1 audio from your project. I don’t think that the AC3 encoder with Movie Studio supports 5.1 Surround (only Stereo).

I have burned a Blu-ray disc with 5.1 Surround audio. Unfortunately DVDA selected the first audio stream with “down-mixed” content. I have sound from front loudspeakers only. Also the property information of DVDA shows the name of this audio stream as “5.1 surround (stereo down-mix)”.

I also rendered separately the AC-3 stream form Vegas and inserted as additional audio stream with the DVDA. The result was two identical audio streams with down-mixed information. I didn’t find a way how to render from Vegas the second audio stream only (with full 6 channels).

Having two audio streams in the project might have caused some confusion. Try this: Render the video only to Blu-ray format. Render the audio only to AC3 5.1 surround. Drop those new files into DVD Architect. I don’t see how it could possibly use the stereo down-mix at that point because it doesn’t exist in the project. There is only video and 5.1 audio.

I already tried your proposal. Rendering of the video stream don’t cause any problems. The separate rendering of the 5.1 audio resulted in AC-3 file with stereo down-mix only. This processing option doesn’t solve my problem.

I’m still looking for a solution – how to render the second audio stream instead of the first audio stream in my AVCHD source file.
