  • MPEG rendering question? PNG problem?

Just installed Vegas 9.0c 64 bit on my new Win 7, HP Intel 8300CPU, 8GB RAM with a Lacie 2 Quadra 2 TB external on a firewire 400 interface, set up as a mirrored RAID.

I’m rendering a 53 minute video, DVCAM (4:3 standard def) to MPEG 2, using the “DVD Architect Video Stream” preset with CBR of 6 Mbps.

The “Elapsed time” is moving a lot faster than the “Remaining time.” From watching in Task Manager, I’ve got all 4 CPU’s bouncing around between 2% and 48%. The most CPU usage is highest when I see “live” video in the Vegas preview window. There are almost 200 graphics, saved as PNG files in the timeline, and the CPU’s show almost no activity when they hit the PNG files. The machine looks like it’s just sitting there waiting for something.

I realize that rendering to an external FW400 drive is not the fastest choice, but it worked fine on my old Pentium 4 single CPU machine, and a lot faster too.

Any thoughts? Is the problem the PNG files? Would a different still file format be better?

The machine has 8GB of memory and shows it’s got about 4 GB of memory in use. Disk access bounces up to 100% occassionally, but the majority of time it’s almost at zero.

Any thoughts? I guess render to the internal SATA drive is my next test . . . .

I just did a quick test, rendering off a 90 second MPEG from the timeline. It has one effect, the timecode effect, added to the output.

    Rendering to the System drive:
    — :40 seconds

    Rendering to the Lacie Raid:
    — :49 seconds till it reaches 100%
    — 6:31 until the drive stops writing and the buttons in the render dialogue box to “Open” and “Open Folder” become available.

IOW, Vegas renders (maybe to a temp file on the C: drive?) but the Lacie Raid is churning along at full speed until it finishes copying the file. Resource manager shows heavy activity on the system drive as well as the Lacie.

Perhaps, Lacie is copying the file to it’s mirror image, but that doesn’t seem likely because I never see any similar slowdowns when capturing.
