    Hi there,

I’m having a great deal of trouble trying to export a clean, unmolested, uncompressed quicktime file of my project. It was shot in 16:9 DV PAL, imported as such, edited as such, and now, I need to export/render as an uncompressed QT file (for importing into a Quantel system)

Now… If I export as MPEG/AVI etc, no problems, it comes out as it went in, 16:9, minimal render time.

However, when I try to render out as anything QT, no matter how I go about it, I always end up with a 4:3 box with my 16:9 stretched across the middle!

    Am I missing something?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is part of my final year project for university!

    Many thanks,

    Mark.

(ps: I have tried exporting as AVI and importing that into the aforementioned Quantel system but it won’t touch it.. that could be another problem for another day though, for now, I feel if I can resolve the QT issue I may be onto a winner!)

    Is this HDV (1440×1080)??

The reason why I ask is that 1440×1080 is actually 4:3 but the pixels are rectangular instead of square (PAR=1.333). Uncompressed AVI does not support this…. only a PAR=1 (square pixels)

No, it’s definitely SD PAL DV. Rendering to AVI completes almost instantly with the ‘No Recompression Required’ message across the preview window.

It is when I try to export as .mov uncompressed that I get problems.

Interestingly enough, I have since found that if, when I go to adjust the render settings, I choose ‘use project settings’ in the drop down box, Vegas seems to flick to NTSC.. But the camera I used was definitely PAL, and checking on the properties on the timeline it confirms DV PAL.

Also, when I allow vegas to render as NTSC, the aspect ratio seems correct (if still bordered by black) but the footage seems to have that ‘digitalised’ sheen across the dark areas.

Rendering as MPEG II DV PAL gives me what I would expect, a full 16:9 screen…

So, I am still unfortunately flummoxed!

I appreciate I have a long way to go to fully understand the implications of every single different codec/setting etc… and that I am probably asking a question with an obvious answer, but any help would be appreciated!

    Mark.

Quicktime is pretty brain dead on a PC. It never gets pixel aspect ratio correct. The only solution I have found is to render using square pixels since this seems to be the only format that the PC version of Quicktime understands. (I assume it actually works on a Mac)

PAL DV Widescreen is 1049×576 in square pixels (PAR 1.0). Try rendering to this resolution.

OK. One thing I have never understood. The Vegas community seems to think that QT is pretty poor, and causes many problems. Why does Vegas continue to rely on it? It apparently uses it, for example, to render tif files and a few video formats.

Well, I for one am part of the “Vegas community”… and maybe I’m the odd man out… but i don’t even have QT on my machine. Got rid of it 5 minutes after the first time I loaded/tested it.

QTplayer takes over your machine and and changes all of your file associations without even asking. Any program like that (IMO) isn’t even worth spitting at.

Even though it’s a fairly universal format and great for transporting material from one program to the other… I refuse to even give it the time of day.

I am not defending QT. I am simply asking why Vegas continues to depend on it rather than relying on its own code. Although I may be mistaken, I am under the impression that Vegas will install QT if you do not already have it. My impression is also that Vegas cannot process certain file types, like tifs, without QT.

I’m not sure where you got this info but you’re wrong on both counts. Vegas does not install QT and it CAN open TIF’s without QT

Vegas does rely on QTplayer (actually the apple codecs within the player since apple will not release them separately)for QT mov files and other apple related stuff.

But Vegas is no different from most other NLE’s…. if you want to work with any apple related formats/codecs you must install QT.
