  • Joining MPEG2 files without re rendering

I believe that for the past few versions Vegas has been capable of joining together in a project MPEG2 files in such a way that they don’t have to be re rendered. If this is true does this hold true only for files that had been encoded at the same bit rates or for any MPEG2 file?

    Thanks in advance

It holds true only if the source files are the same resolution, GOP, and bit-rate as the render template. In other words… Vegas will re-render any files that don’t match the render template bit-rate.

I already have VideoReDo. I was always under the impression that VideoReDo goes a great job , but only if the MPEG2 clips have the same aspect ratio, bit rate etc. Is this not the case?

    Thanks in advance

John – Can you explain this a bit further? Will having your source footage match your output format reduce render time?

Basically – all day long I am recording clips as .mpg2 and then trimming them in Vegas and re-rendering them out as .mpg2 clips. I know my bit-rates don’t currently match.

Can what you are talking about above increase my productivity?

Yes, or have your output match your source. What you can try is to make an MPEG2 rendering template that matches the MPEG2 that you capture. Then Vegas can just copy the parts that are not processed in any way. For example, if you are capturing 720×480 at 3Mbps, make a template that renders 720×480 at 3Mbps. There may be other settings that cause the templates not to match so it’s not easy to do if you are using non-standard formats but it’s worth a try.
